This accession consists of approximately 8.5 meters of textual records created by the Bureau of Northwest Territories and Yukon Affairs and its various predecessors between 1921 and 1948. Also included is a small amount of material generated by successor agencies from 1949 to 1953.

The information contained in these files relates chiefly to administration of services to individuals and organizations rather than policy. Most of the information in the files can be arranged under one of nine main headings: 1) Records of criminal investigations and prosecutions; 2) Records of accidents and missing persons; 3) Applications for naturalization (Pre 1931 only); 4) Relief for destitute natives; 5) Inuit census 1939-1942 conducted by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) posts in the Arctic; 6) Licenses; 7) Administration of goods and property of inhabitants who died or were incapacitated; 8) Income Tax; 9) Personnel records relating to headquarters staff in Ottawa. The records have been organized in series, which follows a general, but not strict chronological order: Series 1 1921-1939; Series 2 1939-1947; Series 3 1947-1953; Series 4 1923-1949.

Very large gaps appear in the file numerical sequence. Losses and transfers caused some of the gaps, assigning old files new numbers in the system whenever they were "brought forward" likely caused others. The majority of the gaps likely occurred when general housekeeping destroyed files of little value. Moreover, files dealing exclusively with the Yukon were transferred to the Yukon Archives. This filing system established in 1922, was a strictly numerical one and by 1953 when a new system was established, over 23,000 files had been registered.

A small amount of material in this fonds (one folder) was received separately from the federal government transfer and was not included in the arrangement listed above. It consists of correspondence from the files of two successive directors, J. Lorne Turner (1936) and R.A. Gibson (1937-1943). Included in the correspondence are a few items pertaining to R.A. Gibson's role as Deputy Commissioner (a position he held through this period, in addition to becoming director of the Lands, Northwest Territories and Yukon Branch in 1937). Material from J. Lorne Turner's file documents includes, among other issues, a food shortage in Coppermine in September 1936.

The sound recordings include (:0001) C. M. "Bud" Drury (Office of the Special Representative for Constitutional Development in the Northwest Territories) press conference, 19 Dec. 1977, Cairns was the reporter, and (:0002) an election campaign interview Cairns conducted with George Erasmus on 5 May 1979. The textual records consist of two items from the records of the Yellowknife Daycare Association.

This fonds consists of 35 photographs from C.W. Mathers' 1901 trip from Athabasca Landing to Fort McPherson. The fonds includes the album "The Far North," published in 1902, consisting of 28 plate reproductions of Mathers' photos and 7 additional black and white photographs depicting Dene, Inuit, the interior of the Fort Good Hope church, views of river travel, portaging, and skin lodges. Copy negatives were made for six of these images in 1992.

Records include photographs of the community of Tungsten. Most of the images depict the Cantung mining and milling operations; there are also images of the townsite.

The photographer of these images is unknown. They were produced by Bush Edit House and may have been taken by the firm's owner, Burt Bush, who was a film producer in North Vancouver and was often contracted by resource companies for their corporate presentations.

Records include photographs of Yellowknife. Included are shots of the Wildcat Café, Canadian Pacific Airlines terminal building, and Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines Ltd.

This fonds consists of 271 photographs, 6 audio reels, 3 sound cassettes and 2 cm of textual material. The photographs were taken and collected by the Buffum Family and depict the covers or interior images of personalized Christmas cards from bush pilots and other people who stayed with the Buffum family. The textual material is made up of the diary of Louise Buffum dated from 1939 to 1945. The sound recordings contain an interview conducted by the Territorial Archivist, David Rudkin with Lyn Orchuk in 1985.

It is titled "Great Slave Lake and Mackenzie River from Fort Resolution to Fort Simpson, NWT" and indicates a "Steamers Route" along the river. It was compiled by R. A. Brooke of Edmonton, from information provided by river pilots Joseph Bird and Captain Mills. Scale is 1" to 2 miles.

The fonds consists of 16.5 cm of textual records, 23 colour slides, and 20 maps created, collected, and used by Parsons during the course of his career as a pilot. The textual records include correspondence, certifications, exams and study notes for various aircraft, and records of training and flights taken. The slides appear to relate to his flights in the Arctic and show a number of unidentified people and communities. The cartographic material consists of maps, which Parsons used as working documents to plan routes.

This accession consists of one souvenir folder of textual records issued by British Petroleum in 1976. It also includes reproductions of lithographs drawn from sketches made by Captain George Back, a member of the Franklin Expedition, in 1826. Some of these sketches were reproduced in "Narrative of a Second Expedition to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the years 1825, 1826 and 1827 by John Franklin". There is also a photographic reproduction of a map which was published in the above named book.

This accession consists of a photocopy of an essay entered in the national essay contest "Know Your Heritage" about the "Old Cemetary [Cemetery]" located at Back Bay in Yellowknife (includes copies of photographs).

The record is 40 minutes long and documents a 'healing walk' for residential school students. The march was held in Yellowknife on June 1, 2000 to raise awareness of the legacy of residential schools in the NWT. With funding from the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, the Trauma Treatment Training Program for community caregivers of the NWT coordinated the event. The march stopped at various Yellowknife locations to acknowledge the impact and responsibility different organizations played in the legacy of residential schools. These included: Akaitcho Hall, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Gold Range Bar, the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development building (the Bellanca Building), and the NWT Legislative Assembly. The end of the march featured a sharing circle at the Legislative Assembly building and a drum dance ceremony. The video includes a speech by Robert (Bob) Overvold of DIAND and Sister Dora Durand of the Roman Catholic Church. The video also includes individual interviews with participants and organizers of the march. Production staff included Dennis Allen (Camera/Editor), Chris Rodgers (Second Camera), Peter Squirrel (Titles), Delphine Elleze (Producer) and the Native Communications Society (NCS-TV).

This fonds consists of 4 cm textual material including: a contract the company had with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Cominco) hospital and correspondence received from head office concerning the day to day operation of the drilling company.

This fonds consists of 1.65 m of textual records and 44 photographs. The records document the activities of the Northwest Territories Council of the Boy Scouts of Canada/Scouts Canada from its formation in 1972 until 2001. The material has been artificially arranged into five series:

• Planning, Policy, and Administration includes correspondence, minutes and reports related to the formation of the NWT Scout Council, strategic planning, bylaws, policies and procedures, contracts for services with the Alberta Council, and training of volunteers, as well as general chrono correspondence files.

• AGMs and Executive Meetings includes agendas, minutes, and other materials related to Annual General Meetings and NWT Scout Council executive meetings.

• Publications includes newsletters and reports published by the NWT Scout Council.

• Regions and Local Groups includes documentation of interaction between the NWT Scout Council and regional councils and local scout groups; membership census records and group charters; RCMP returns detailing scouting activity in the communities; and photographs of local group meetings.

• Projects and Events includes correspondence and reports related to service projects, badges, NWT jamborees, cuborees, regional camps and trips, and interaction between scout groups inside and outside the NWT, as well as photographs of service projects and camps.

It was not possible to reconstruct a single original order for this fonds. It appears that the material was organized different ways at different times, and somefiles from earlier periods may have been carried over to later ones while others were not. In addition, some of the records arrived at the Archives as loose papers. The records have been artificially arranged for ease of access; the material has been organized by type/subject of records, while maintaining as much as possible of the order that was discernible.

Records include images of Yellowknife, Pine Point, Con Mine, prospectors, tractor trains, and barges.

This fonds consists of 754 photographs, 95 postcards, 23 audio reels and 2 audio cassettes, 29 maps and 8.2 meters of textual records created and accumulated by Robert "Bobby" Porritt from the 1920s until his death in 1984. The records include correspondence, Porritt's notes, accounting records, banking records, other business records, records pertaining to the Northwest Territories Legislative Council (consisting primarily of copies), memorabilia, Jock McMeekan's records, a few annual reports and newsletters, some posters and ephemera, newspaper clippings, maps and plans, sound recordings, and photographs. In particular, the records document Porritt's occupational and political activities, his personal interests and his relationships with many friends and family members.

The correspondence, in particular is an excellent record of the economic, social and political aspects of life in Hay River from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Porritt appears to have maintained intense personal contacts with the majority of the people in the Hay River area, including considerable correspondence with aboriginal hunters and trappers, who had become friends of Porritt. Also well documented is the Fort Resolution community in the 1930s, through correspondence and business records of the Fort Resolution Lumber Company. Since Porritt was Member of the Legislative Council for Mackenzie South, the records include correspondence with various other members of Council (e.g. Commissioner Ben G. Sivertz and John Goodall) and members of parliament. These letters contain discussion about political and bureaucratic issues facing Council before the move of the territorial government to Yellowknife in 1967. Unusually active in local organizations, Porritt's papers contain correspondence on behalf of these organizations. His interest in all aspects of his community, the north, and the world in general, are revealed in the magazines, ephemera, posters and other types of items he collected. The photographs taken and collected by Porritt cover a wide variety of subjects and dates. Photographs of family members, friends, business colleagues, communities and special interests such as aircraft and marine transportation are predominating.

In 1986, the NWT Archives received some 70 linear meters of records of Bobby Porritt, which included newspapers and government publications. Although the records had survived a flood and subsequent repacking, virtually no original order was discernible. Arrangement of series is by type of record, with the correspondence arranged in somewhat more detail than most other series. The photographs were sorted according to several subject categories.

The images depict daily life, mine employees, the camp and mining operations at Port Radium. In addition, there are several images of Northern Transportation Company Limited tugboats, barges and paddle steamers, as well as locations such as Hay River, Norman Wells and Inuvik.

Records include moving images documenting the Bluefish Power Project. The film includes footage of the construction camp and the building of a tunnel, which took place between March to December 1940.

This accession consists of of 16 black and white photographs dated ca. 1939 to 1942 of various stages of the construction of the Con Hydro Bluefish Lake dam built by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd.

This fonds consists of records created and held by Bishop Arthur Henry Sovereign during his appointments as Bishop of the Yukon from 1931-1932 and Bishop of Athabasca from 1932-1950. The records broadly document Bishop Sovereign's time in the north, his travels to different communities, and the development of cities and towns that he served.

The fond was put together into series by the archivist based on location: Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, and other (Misc).

The films were largely shot by Otto Binder and depict life in the Beaufort Delta region, and the community of Reindeer Station in particular. Footage of travel by water, as well as reindeer herding activities feature prominently. Shots of family and community life are also within the collection.

This fonds consists of 96 copy photographs and slides taken by Bill Stewart of the Mooseskin Boat Project in 1981. The photographs were selected out of 180 of Bill Stewart's photographs. The images include the different phases of the boat under construction, the people involved in the project and views of the boat's trip from the point of construction at the head of the Keele River to Fort Norman.

The photographs were originally housed in an album. Most of the prints have no accompanying information such as dates or identifications. The album contains images of mines and mining camps, fishing, hunting, fur trading, dog sledding, the Largent family and the city of Yellowknife. Most of the photographs were likely taken in the 1940's.

The cover page of the album reads: "This album was put together by Bill Largent. Bill spent from 1920 to 1951 in the Yellowknife and Hay River area. His parents were fur traders or supplied trading posts in these areas. Bill passed away in Nanaimo in 1981, July 25th."

The original film [Trucking - Beyond the Fringe, was taken by John Denison and] William Kruining in 1961 [1964] during a trip with the Byers transport convoy on the winter road from Yellowknife going through Discovery Mine to Tundra Mine. Footage includes the making of the winter road, the Byers Tankard Curling Bonspiel, mine truck and airplane transportation, and [Cooper- Dessemer power generator] equipment delivery. Also includes views of Salmita Mine. The documentary is in colour with sound. <15 minutes.

Records include images of Fort Liard residents and Boy Scouts at Fort Providence.
