This fonds consists of 7 photographs and 3.5 cm of textual material. The textual material is made up of 3 prospecting field books containing dating from 1926, 1927 and 1953, as well as a small number of Canadian Wildlife Service Bird Band cards dated 1955-1959. In addition there is one five page written report by W.L. McDonald in 1958 on the Mar Mineral Claims at Marian Lake, a number of hand drawn maps that relate to the mining of lithium in the Yellowknife area and a diary found at Jolliffe Island containing weather observations and bird watching notes from 1940-1948. Also included are five pages of handwritten notes on northern birds, found in his cabin on Jolliffe Island. The images include portraits of William McDonald and companions, as well as pictures of eagles. Mr. McDonald collected these images circa 1969 and negatives were copied from the original photographs in 1990.

This fonds consists of 630 photographs, 68 maps and 5.5 cm of textual records produced or accumulated by the federal Department of the Interior, between 1882 and 1937. The photographs include 170 reproductions of federal government issues, originally from a collection of over 2,000 lantern slides reproduced from various federal departmental sources. The majority of the images were not related to the Northwest Territories and were forwarded to the National Archives of Canada in 1990. These colour images document the scenery, town sites and local people, including Dene and Inuit of the Northwest Territories and includes many images of the Harry Snyder Canadian Expedition (1937). An album entitled "Office of District Agent, N.W.T. & Y. Branch, Fort Smith" contains 368 black and white photographs, dating predominantly from the 1920's, depicting a variety of subjects such as missions, transportation along the Mackenzie River and treaty payment. Another 91 photographs are from an incomplete copy of L.T. Burwash's report entitled, "The Eskimo, Their Country and Its Resources: Economic Survey of the East Coasts of Hudson Bay and James Bay from Richmond Gulf to Rupert House, Including the Belcher and Other Adjacent Islands", Ottawa, Department of the Interior, 1927. (Typewritten.) The report contains a diary of the trip taken by Burwash, descriptions of Inuit life, food supplies, clothing, health, the influence of trading posts, housing conditions, and mineral and animal resources in the region. Much of the report focuses on the Inuit in the regions around Little Whale River and the Belcher Islands. The photographs depict communities along eastern coasts of Hudson Bay and James Bay. The mounting of the photographs in this report suggests that this copy was a draft produced before its final publication. The photographs have been removed from the report and stored separately for preservation reasons. In addition, this report also contains 8 maps. The remaining 50 maps in this fonds date from 1882 to 1933; they were produced by the Department of the Interior. Map areas include: Great Bear Lake, Great Slave lake, Dismal Lakes, Coppermine River, Mackenzie River, Thelon River, Backs River (Back River), Camsell River, Slave River, Cameron Bay, Keewatin, and Ungava, navigational maps of Slave River, Great Slave Lake, the Mackenzie River, Artillery Lake, Lac Du Bois, Casba Lake, Campbell Lake, Sifton Lake, Thelon River, Hanbury River, Beverly Lake, Aberdeen Lake, Schultz Lake, and Baker Lake. Two items depict leased areas for petroleum and natural gas exploration in the south Great Slave Lake region. The remaining textual material dated 1921, includes one file of correspondence of O.S. Finnie, Acting Secretary for the Department of the Interior, and three files regard applications for surveying and exploration permits in the Great Slave Lake and Pine Point areas.

This fonds consists of 4 cm textual material including: a contract the company had with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Cominco) hospital and correspondence received from head office concerning the day to day operation of the drilling company.

This fonds consists of 83 photographs primarily of Goldfields, Saskatchewan, Yellowknife and Gordon Lake. Images include the construction of Con Mine in Yellowknife and Camlaren Mines, Ltd. at Gordon Lake. Camp personnel are also featured. The photographs are arranged into four series: Goldfields, Saskatchewan; Yellowknife; Gordon Lake; and Miscellaneous.

This fonds consists of 33 black and white photographs taken or acquired by Roy Quinstrom between 1937-1939 while he was an employee of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Ltd. of Yellowknife. The images include the first gold brick poured in the North, the Con Mine site, raising a cat tractor from below the ice, scenery, floatplanes and barges.

This fonds consists of one Betacam video containing footage of Yellowknife, Peg Tantalum mine, a plane taking off and landing in Port Radium, an aerial view of Fort Smith and footage of Coppermine. Dr. Paris B. Stockdale, a geologist from the University Of Tennessee, shot the original 16 mm film in July 1946. A BetaCam copy was made in October 2002. In addition, there is also footage of the Fort McMurray, Alberta airport, Noranda/Val D'or Mining District in northwestern Quebec, the Noranda District in Ontario and Flin Flon, Manitoba.

This fonds consists of two audiocassette tapes, one sound CD, approximately 943 colour negatives, two 8 mm videocassettes, approximately 50 cm of textual material and one site plan generated or collected by the NWT Mining Heritage Society between 2000-2002. The audiocassettes and sound CD contain interviews with former employees of Giant Mine including Bill Case, Al Hall, Joe Malmsten, Jim McKay, George Dundas, Frank Horvat, Lorne Wrigglesworth, Tom Natyshen, Bill Hall, Sam Bitner, Dan Edjericon, J.C. Brien, Lew Whalen, Walter Dwyer, Mark Eveson, Francois H. Maille and Dave Nickerson. The interviews were coordinated and conducted by Bill Case, Walt Humphries and Brian Weir. The 943 images document the interior and exterior of buildings at Giant Mine, as well as show mining equipment and machinery. The videocassettes also document the interior and exterior of buildings, the Giant Mine site and machinery and equipment. The textual material includes agendas and minutes of meetings of the Giant Mine Heritage Working Group (now known as the NWT Mining Heritage Society), the final report on the assessment of Giant Mine, as well as correspondence and information related to the development of a mining museum at the Giant Mine site. In addition, there is a site plan showing Giant Mine buildings and locations.

This fonds consists of 5 mm. of text, 53 black and white photographs (prints) and one DVD version of a film entitled "The Secret Years of Eldorado". The text includes a letter from the Semaine Internationale Contre Le Cancer announcing Charles Labine as as recipient of the "Pierre et Marie Curie" medal in consideration of the discovery of radium; prospectus and share distribution re: "Eldorado Gold Mines Limited" and a "Portfolio of Reproductions of the Documents of Surrender" from the Second World War which was presented to Chalres Labine. The photographs include images of the mining operations at Eldorado Mine at Great Bear Lake.

The black and white photographs date to the late 1930s and early 1940s and depict buildings and activities in Yellowknife and at the Con, Giant, and Ptarmigan mine sites. The colour photographs were taken in Yellowknife during a reunion trip in the 1980s and feature buildings in the Yellowknife area.

Records were created by Peter M. Porter during his time employed as resident watchman/caretaker on Outpost Island in Great Slave Lake, 1938-1940. The records include Porter's journal from November 15, 1938-July 26, 1939, which gives a day-by-day account of life alone on the island. Other records include corresondence from Slave Lake Gold Mines, merchants, and friends, September 1938 to February 1940.

The original film [Trucking - Beyond the Fringe, was taken by John Denison and] William Kruining in 1961 [1964] during a trip with the Byers transport convoy on the winter road from Yellowknife going through Discovery Mine to Tundra Mine. Footage includes the making of the winter road, the Byers Tankard Curling Bonspiel, mine truck and airplane transportation, and [Cooper- Dessemer power generator] equipment delivery. Also includes views of Salmita Mine. The documentary is in colour with sound. <15 minutes.

The photographs were originally housed in an album. Most of the prints have no accompanying information such as dates or identifications. The album contains images of mines and mining camps, fishing, hunting, fur trading, dog sledding, the Largent family and the city of Yellowknife. Most of the photographs were likely taken in the 1940's.

The cover page of the album reads: "This album was put together by Bill Largent. Bill spent from 1920 to 1951 in the Yellowknife and Hay River area. His parents were fur traders or supplied trading posts in these areas. Bill passed away in Nanaimo in 1981, July 25th."

Records include photographs of the Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines Limited property at Morris Lake, and a variety of aircraft such as the Gypsy Moth, Bellanca Air Cruiser, and a Biplane among others in Yellowknife and at Giauque Lake. There are also photographs of Norman W. Byrne, his wife Rose, and his son Donald.

This accession consists of one 16 mm film reel of the 1948 National Film Board of Canada film "Yellowknife, Canada", and one copy of the film on Umatic videocassette. The images in the film include views of Yellowknife, mining, the pouring of a gold brick, and the Snare River Power Dam.

The photographs document some of the first buildings erected at the Con Mine camp in Yellowknife.

The majority of these images are fixed on the pages of a photo album. It would appear that the other prints have fallen out of, or been removed from the album. The images depict life in and around Yellowknife, and in particular document buildings, head frames and activities at the Negus Mine, including the fire at Negus. There are also photographs of Con Mine, Giant Mine and Rycon Mine. In addition, there are images of the Bluefish (Con Hydro) power plant, the installation and hauling of equipment to the Canol Project, the opening of Stanton Hospital, as well as images of Yellowknife residents such as Father Gathy, Gerry Murphy, Dr. Stanton, Mavis Riley (Kingston), and Dr. A.W. (Fred) Jolliffe. In addition, there are images of Jolliffe Island, Detah and Girvin’s Cafe. The bulk of the accession concerns the years 1946 and 1947.

This accession consists of 11 black and white photographs featuring people, a camp at Yellowknife, the connecting of Yellowknife's first electrical wires, and the first gold brick poured at Yellowknife.

This accession consists of five diaries for the years 1932 to 1936 at the Eldorado Gold Mines Ltd. Labine Point, Great Bear Lake, NWT. The period of 1932 and 1933 resembles a ledger recording daily operations, personnel and duties. From 1934 to 1936 the nature of the diary changes and no longer records the personnel, duties, etc. and begins to record accounts of life at the mine, visitors, sicknesses and includes reports of accidents such as drownings and disappearances.

Photographs mainly depict the Bear Exploration and Radium, Ltd. (BEAR) mine site at Contact Lake.

The textual records include correspondence, a radio licence issued by the federal Dept. of Marine, and one letter from BEAR Assistant Superintendent, George K. Foster. Photographs depict BEAR radio equipment, personnel, camp buildings, and the surrounding area. Two images also depict Back's chimneys at Old Fort Reliance.

The images depict daily life, mine employees, the camp and mining operations at Port Radium. In addition, there are several images of Northern Transportation Company Limited tugboats, barges and paddle steamers, as well as locations such as Hay River, Norman Wells and Inuvik.

Photographs depict the abandoned Thompson-Lundmark Gold Mine site and show the Kim shaft, mine site, and equipment inside the mill. The ravenous forest fires of the summer of 1998 and Mr. Regier's particular interest in old places combined to inspire he and a colleague to charter a float plane to visit the Thompson-Lundmark site. Their timing was fortunate, as the site burned the following day.

This fonds consists of 0.1 cm of textual records, 859 photographs (242 black and white negatives, 300 black and white prints - original masters; 766 black and white digital files (TIFF), 15 colour digital files (TIFF) - archival masters; 55 black and white negatives, 23 black and white prints - original and archival masters), 15 8mm film reels (original masters), four 16mm film reels (original masters), 19 Betacam SP videocassettes (archival masters), and one 8mm film reel (original and archival master).

The textual records consist of a membership certificate. The majority of the photographs document Sam’s life prospecting, mining, and trapping between 1930 and 1950, while a smaller selection document Sam’s nuclear family life beginning in 1952. There are five main series of photographs: work in the Great Bear Lake region with the Northern Transportation Company and uranium mines in the early to mid-1930s; gold mining, camping, and prospecting in the Great Slave Lake area in the mid-1930s through the 1940s; work on the Canol project in 1942-1943; trapping on the barren lands (tundra) of the Keewatin region near Clinton-Colden Lake and the Back River area in the late 1930s to 1950; and Sam’s nuclear family life from 1952 onwards. Communities documented in this fonds include early images of Yellowknife’s Old Town and Latham Island, Fort Franklin (Deline), Cameron Bay camps, Norman Wells, Fort Resolution, and Fort Smith. The moving images document being on the land, prospecting, and hunting between 1930 and 1960, and town and family life between 1950 and 1970.

The digital files (TIFF) are scans of the original black and white negatives, black and white prints, and colour negatives, while the videocassettes are transfers from the original 8mm and 16mm film reels, all created by Sam Otto and loaned by his son Sheldon in 2000. The majority of the originally loaned items were returned by Sam Otto's daughter Lorraine in 2015, in addition to some newly offered materials.

This accession consists of six black and white photographs taken by Jack Horan in Yellowknife and one illustrated oversize newspaper insert from the "Edmonton Bulletin" entitled "Yellowknife! World's Largest Potential Gold Field". The photographs show miners, and the Con Mine site.
