This fonds consists of 33 black and white photographs taken or acquired by Roy Quinstrom between 1937-1939 while he was an employee of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Ltd. of Yellowknife. The images include the first gold brick poured in the North, the Con Mine site, raising a cat tractor from below the ice, scenery, floatplanes and barges.

The black and white photographs date to the late 1930s and early 1940s and depict buildings and activities in Yellowknife and at the Con, Giant, and Ptarmigan mine sites. The colour photographs were taken in Yellowknife during a reunion trip in the 1980s and feature buildings in the Yellowknife area.

Records include photographs of the Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines Limited property at Morris Lake, and a variety of aircraft such as the Gypsy Moth, Bellanca Air Cruiser, and a Biplane among others in Yellowknife and at Giauque Lake. There are also photographs of Norman W. Byrne, his wife Rose, and his son Donald.

The photographs document some of the first buildings erected at the Con Mine camp in Yellowknife.

Photographs depict the abandoned Thompson-Lundmark Gold Mine site and show the Kim shaft, mine site, and equipment inside the mill. The ravenous forest fires of the summer of 1998 and Mr. Regier's particular interest in old places combined to inspire he and a colleague to charter a float plane to visit the Thompson-Lundmark site. Their timing was fortunate, as the site burned the following day.

The photographs date from 1944 to the early 1950s and most document mining sites and mining activities in the Yellowknife area. The gold mines depicted include: Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, Ltd.; Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; Akaitcho Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; Crestaurum Gold Mines, Ltd.; Discovery Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; North Inca Gold Mines, Ltd.; Thompson-Lundmark Gold Mines, Ltd.; and Diversified Mining Interests (Canada), Ltd. Also included are photographs of Old Town and the new town site in Yellowknife, the archaeological site near Old Fort Reliance and Dene preparing hides at Lac La Martre. Most of the images were photographed by Webster, but are included is a series of George Radisics' photographs and an album that Carl Pielsticker compiled. The postcards consist of images of Yellowknife and the greeting cards show drawings of Yellowknife.

This fonds consists of 83 photographs taken at Yellowknife and at the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Con Mine) between 1938 and 1940. The images document some of the first buildings to be erected in Yellowknife and at the mine. A number of images depict miners working at Con Mine, including images taken underground at the mine site. In addition, there are photographs of miners' wives, images of the boats that carried freight into Yellowknife, including the "Hearne Lake" and the "Radium King," and images of Dene women and children waiting outside the first hospital in Yellowknife, which was located at Con Mine.

This fonds consists of 3 cm of textual material comprised of typewritten correspondence between Leo Ranney of McConnelsville, Ohio and his brother W.C. Ranney who lived in Yellowknife. The content of the letters concern W.C. Ranney's mining claims, his negotiations with Negus Mine and business ventures in Yellowknife. One letter is addressed to the President of Negus Mine and is written by Leo Ranney.

This accession consists of 6 photographs of the construction of the Bluefish River Hydro Dam for Con Mine.

Both formats feature an interview with John Larson, a former employee at Con Mine, recorded by Tony Mayo in 1975. The interview was originally recorded on the audio cassette tape and later copied to audio reel for preservation purposes.

Records are comprised of a diamond drill record dating from 1944-1945 for the Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd. claim. It appears that the work was done by Frobisher Explorations, a subsidiary of Ventures Ltd. who, in 1941, gained control of what would become the Giant Mine. The results were taken from the core samples drilled. Information tracked includes the location of the drill site in latitude and depth, the elevation of collar, the direction at start, start and completion dates (incomplete), and ultimate depth. Each entry provided the depth (feet), formation or makeup of the sample (including descriptive comments), the sample number, weight of the sample, and any assay information. Many of the forms have been initialled or signed, some by J.M. Bateway. Giant Mine went into production in 1948.

This fonds contains records documenting prospecting and mining activities around Yellowknife, primarily in the 1930s. There are images of camps, floatplanes, boats, scenery, C. John Baker and Herb Dixon. The videocassette (VHS) contains 8 mm film footage that was taken by John Baker between 1935-1936. There are scenes of traveling, camping and prospecting in the Yellowknife area and mining activities at the Rich claim (Giant Mine).

The textual material consists of an 82-page transcript of an interview with John Baker that was conducted by Walter Humphries in 1994. There are also copies of Baker's correspondence and work-related papers concerning prospecting activities in the Yellowknife area and the Rich claim (Giant Mine), as well as extracts from newspapers dated 1934-1947, a report by A.W. Jolliffe on the Yellowknife River area, an article about John Baker from the CIM Reporter, resident hunting and trapping licenses and a summary report on the Rich Group of Claims. In addition, there are 4 bound journals dated from 1935-1936 containing correspondence and observations about development and drilling, ordering mining supplies and equipment, payroll and expense information at the Giant Mine. Two of the journals contain notes and correspondence written by C. John Baker and the other two journals consist of correspondence and notes written by Lockie Burwash.

This fonds consists of 3 cm of textual material of correspondence and progress reports relating to the operations and closing down of Beaulieu Yellowknife Mines Ltd.

This fonds consists of 12 cm of original and published textual material, 41 black and white and colour photographs relating to the mine at Outpost Island and Slave Lake Gold Mines Ltd and one map. The original textual material includes handwritten and typewritten letters written by Archie Jamieson, his family, friends that worked at Outpost Island and J.J. Byrne. In addition, there are original proxy forms for the Slave Lake Gold Mines Shareholders Committee, a share certificate, and an envelope addressed to Archie Jamieson that is stamped Outpost Island Post Office, 1941. There is also a Report to Bondholders and Shareholders from Slave Lake Gold Mines Ltd., three blank proxy forms for the Slave Lake Gold Mines Ltd., as well as correspondence and a copy of a Supreme Court of Ontario ruling under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act, 1933. In addition, there is some photocopied textual material consisting of published information about mineral development at Outpost Island, a diamond drill record, as well as copies of correspondence related to the operation of the mine The photographs date between the 1940s and 1990s and include both black and white and colour photographs, as well as 13 copy digital photographs. The photographs depict the Outpost Island mine site, staff and buildings including the mill, the boat used by employees to leave the site and former recreation centre. The map is of the Northwestern part of Canada and identifies the location of Outpost Island, and the distances from Outpost Island to Fort Resolution, Yellowknife and Edmonton.

Records include a film shot in January 1987 to capture the last year of operation of Salmita mine. The film was produced and directed by Larry Campanas, who was employed at Salmita Mine as the Safety and Mine Resources Coordinator. The camera was operated by Wayne Bayrack. The film also features an original song performed by Jerry Snow.

The fonds consists of 23.5 cm of textual records and 117 maps created by Bear Exploration and Radium Limited in its exploration and development work in the gold mining industry around Yellowknife in the 1930s and 1940s. The records appear to be predominently those of BEAR's NWT Manager of Operations, Hugh Fraser, and include correspondence, reports, financial statements, drill records, licenses, payroll and employment records, prospector's agreements, assay certificates, certificates of work, and maps of maps of claims, drill holes, and geological features for several groups of claims in the Yellowknife area, including Jacknife, Yellowrex, Giant, Sevenore (Fort Rae Gold), Atlas, Admiral, Quyta, Greyling, G.E.M, Ace, Daw, Homer, Neptune, Turnback Lake, Akaitcho, Lucky, HGB, WO3, BYG, and Beulah Gold Mines.

The images date from the late 1930s and include subjects such as Negus mine, camp life at Negus, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (Con mine), cat trains, water transportation, buildings such as the Wildcat Café, Yellowknife Hotel, Yellowknife Drug Store, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, as well as images of many unidentified people.

This fonds consists of one photo album containing 102 prints and 53 loose prints taken by John Day. Many of the images depict Day's 1938 trip by boat from Athabasca to Yellowknife. Other images show Yellowknife in the late 1930s, Negus and Cominco camps and construction crews, mine sites and locations such as Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Smith.
