McKay. She wasn't a Simpson girl but she worked for the Sisters. She was from along the line,
There is a Fort McKay I don't know if she come from that far up or not, but it's one of the older
families in the north anyhow. Nice girl. Good looking, clean girl. Isidore (Villeneuve) was kind
ofa little bit sweet on her. That's why you'll find dozens of pictures of Nora. And you see the
Bishop down there poking in the fire. I don't know if that's [unintelligible]. I think maybe you'd
find his picture in the Mission book unless it's after that. But it isn't. It's before the books.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 06: Charlie could not remember the bishop's name. This photo
and Photo 40 may be of the same event because of the nuns in both.
It is interesting how lightly dressed Nora and the bishop are compared to the nuns, suggesting to
me that the nuns spent nearly all their time indoors and were not very acclimated to winter.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 41. This is on the way down the Liard River. I think it is below Fort Liard. And that's the little beggar sitting back there in the bow and there's Harry's head and of course the rest of us are cut off. We are drifting down in Joe Clark's scows in 1934.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: George trapped on the Mackenzie downstream from Fort Simpson.

One folder consisting of the Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development commenting on a land use permit application as required under the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act.

CharIie's photo description: That's not very far back on the island. Somebody cut a little wood there on
the Anglican's land. The guy on the left [right], that's Baptiste Deneyou. Dene means people. So why do
they call them the Dene people? But that's what they called the whole family. Fort Simpson had a name
something like that before it was Fort Simpson. I can't remember that now. Then also Devil's Island and
then Fort Simpson Island.
That's Emily. From left to right that's Baptiste. [Baptiste is on the right.] He's from the Four Mile houses.
And Emily Sate. She got to be Emily George, Mrs. George, when she married Arthur George's son. The
good looking dark one there is my sister-in-law, Beatrice Sibbeston. The other one is Alice [nee
Sibbeston] Strevens. She's married to Ern Strevens She was Alice Sibbeston. There's three sisters in a
row. The little one back there is Emma Sibbeston. She's married to a ... a Ukrainian name. Denesyk
[spelling unknown]. The fat fellow behind there that's Ronald Cree, and the one right below him in the
foreground there, that's Thomas Hope, the little bull cook from the sawmill picture. I don't know who's
sitting in the toboggan there, in the carriole.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 42. Caption on the back reads, "The Mugs Harry and Milt" and it's obviously written in a woman's writing. That was a woman we boarded with, Mrs. Joyce. Mrs. Joyce I would assume took the picture because it's her writing on the back. Poor Harry. He was always looking for something to laugh at. Didn't matter how tough things were, he could find a chuckle. Oh yeah.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: In his interview Carl Falcon describes shooting fish with a .22. in a pool in Borden Creek. He does not mention dynamiting fish but he does say that Bennett Creek was too small to have fish. This photo is clearly by the woodpile at their cabin—see Photos 41, 42 and 46. It is unlikely that fish would have been brought all the way from Borden Creek back to their Bennett Creek cabin unless the weather was very cool, which calls into question Falcon's claim of a fishless Bennett Creek. The left fish is probably a Dolly Varden.

Judging from the woodpile, this photo was taken about the same time as Photos 41 and 42, which is likely early summer.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 43. That's Ole Lindberg's garden taken from standing at his cabin door looking across the Liard River toward the northwest it would be I guess in 1935. '35 or '36 but I don't know which one.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 12: The short warm summers with their long days and localized areas of fine soils produced welcome fresh food. Root crops such as potatoes and carrots did well as did cabbage and its relatives. There was a small experimental farm at Fort Simpson but prior to its establishment Jack LaFlair supposedly corresponded with a Dominion Experimental Farm in Alberta. He received seeds from it and sent back reports on how the plants from such seeds produced. The RC Mission garden at Fort Simpson (photo 69) was well known and was really a small farm producing potatoes for nearby missions. The Lindberg garden was one of many lesser known ones. The RC Mission at Fort Liard also had a large productive garden.
