This fonds consists of 935 copy photographs (35 mm negatives) of Fort Providence and its surrounding area. This is a collection of images featuring the work of many photographers including O.S. Finnie, Rene Fumoleau and Celine Lafferty. Most of the photographs were donated to the Research Project by the Catholic Mission. There are a variety of images including those of the residents of Fort Providence, the Roman Catholic Mission and clergy, agriculture and gardening. There appears to be some duplication within the collection.

The fonds consists of 353 sound cassettes (items :0001 to :0353) generated during interviews with 17 elders; 19 black and white negatives (items :0354 to :0372); 20 cm of textual material consisting of English transcripts of the interviews (box\file 1-8 to 1-18 and 2-1 to 2-6); and other textual materials related to the planning, funding, and administration of the project (box\file 1-1 to 1-7). The fonds has been divided into four series: 1) sound recordings; 2) administration files; 3) transcripts; 4) negatives. The 181 sound cassettes are in Chipewyan and the remaining 172, (which are verbatim translations of the original Chipewyan cassettes) are in English. Subjects covered in the interviews include Chipewyan stories and legends, spiritual beliefs, traditional medicines, child-rearing, child birth, attitudes to alcohol, family histories, hunting and fishing techniques, traditional forms of self-government, attitudes toward southern forms of government, the Roman Catholic Church and the Residential School in Fort Resolution. The photographs depict the staff and pupils of the Roman Catholic Mission School in Fort Resolution, and elders in the community - some of whom were interviewed during the project. The fonds also contains a copy of the questionnaire, which was used as a basis for each interview and a copy of the publication "That's the Way We Lived."

This fonds consists of one file of minutes from the Fort Resolution Settlement Council from March 20, 1972 to May 9, 1972.

This fonds consists of copies of the typed minutes of the Hamlet Council meetings held February 25, 1970 and November 18, 1970. It includes the Accounts Payable for November 30, 1970 and a copy of By-law 12.

The DVD is a copy of an 8 mm film of home movies shot in Fort Simpson in the 1950s by Ron Cree. The film depicts life in the settlement at that time.
The film footage and stills include images of the community of Fort Simpson, barges and planes, notable people such as the Kraus family and the Linbergs, activities such as the arrival of Cat trains and supplies, RCMP buildings, mission buildings, the experimental farm and the royal visit of Prince Philip to Fort Simpson.

Records include video recordings containing oral history interviews with prominent citizens of Fort Simpson including Albert Faille, Ted Trindell, George McPherson, Marguerite and Baptiste Squirrel, Red Thomason, and Joe Squirrel. In addition there is also footage of the breakup of the Mackenzie River. The footage was shot in 1972.

Textual records consist of one 1960 yearbook, entitled "Borean" which was produced by the staff and students at Fort Smith Federal High School. The yearbook contains photographs of the staff and students and articles about both the Fort Smith Federal High School and the Fort Smith Federal Day School - an elementary school. This was the first yearbook to be produced in the NWT, and contains greetings from a number of federal politicians including Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, Alvin Hamilton, the Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources, and R.G. Robertson, the Commissioner of the NWT. The yearbook also contains a number of biographical sketches of long-time residents of Fort Smith and a history of the town.

This fonds consists of mimeographed copies of typed minutes from meetings of the following: Advisory Committee of the Local Improvement District of Fort Smith (November 1959 to March 1964); Council of the Corporation of the Village of Fort Smith (April 1964 to September 1966); Council of the Corporation of the Town of Fort Smith, (October 1966 to December 1966). In addition, there is a copy of a brief: "The Choice of a Capital for the Northwest Territories," dated November 1965.

Records include photographs documenting Francis (Frank) Leo Buckley's work freighting supplies on his scow in the Northwest Territories between 1938-1940. Also includes photographs of the Buckley family, who lived in Yellowknife between 1938-1942 in a house built by Frank Buckley in the Peace River Flats neighbourhood.

This fonds consists of approximately 3280 photographs in both slide and print format, 18 audiocassettes, 1 audio reel, which was copied to 1 sound CD, 6 cm of text and 2 film reels in 8 mm format. The records document Frank Gonda's life in various northern communities. The cassette recordings appear to be interviews with elders or carvers from Pelly Bay. The textual files document Gonda's attempts to create curriculum for art to be used in schools in the Northwest Territories and his efforts to obtain a Masters degree from the University of Alberta.

This fonds consists of personal and work related correspondence, staking agreements, certificates of work and mining licenses. Also included are records relating to business deals between Frank Morrison and Germaine Lafleur concerning mineral claims.

Records include one photocopy of Frank Russell's journal dated from April 26, 1893 to August 18, 1894. The journal documents Russell's trip from Edmonton to Lake Athabasca, and along the Mackenzie River to Fort Good Hope. In addition, it covers a trip between Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake, and along the Coppermine River. The journal also contains a limited vocabulary list for the Dogrib (Tlicho), Loucheux (Gwich'in) and Yellowknives Dene. Requests for copies should be directed to the Smithsonian Institute.

This fonds consists of 76 b&w print photographs taken by Frank Thomas Carter; five of the photos are hand coloured. The photos document Carter’s voyage to Norman Wells up the Mackenzie as well as the early stages of construction of the oil storage tanks at the Canol Project in Norman Wells during 1942-1943. The photos are numbered on the back in the order in which they appeared on album pages by the donor, Donald A. Davidson, Carter’s stepson. Overall themes include the Mackenzie River, construction, boats, camp life and the Canol project.

This accession consists of one letter from John Franklin dated October 25, 1830.

This fonds consists of one photo album containing 86 b&w prints and one loose print that were taken by Fraser Marshall in 1938 and 1939. The album documents travels of Fraser Marshall as an engineer on on a bush plane (CF-BDW). The images include scenic views in and around Yellowknife, images of Fort Smith, floatplanes, dog teams, tractor trains, hunting and fishing activities and scenery from the Great Slave Lake region.

This fonds consists of 262 photographs, a 1921 article written by Fred Jackson for the Hudson's Bay Company publication "The Beaver" about the first planes in Fort Simpson, notes by John Berens on the 1924 wreck of the "S.S. Northland Trader" and barge "Bell Rock" and Jackson's 1921 radiotelegraphy (telegraph) licence. The photographs include two albums titled "From the Land of the Midnight Sun" and feature various Dene and Inuit communities in northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Also featured are steam ships, the Hay River Mission and school children.

The images document Fred North's time in Inuvik (1957-1963 as principal of Sir Alexander Mackenzie School; 1965-1966 either as vice-principal of the new school or back at SAMS; 1967-1973 at one of the schools, probably as principal), Fort Simpson (1963-1965 as school principal) and Yellowknife (1973-1979 - spent one or two years as school principal in Lac la Martre / Whatı̀. Then he served as Superintendent of School Services-Operations ordering furnishings and supplies for all NWT schools). The images show schools, students, teachers, and classrooms, as well as northern events like carnivals, royal visits, and Northern Games. There are also images of various communities and the buildings within them.

This accession consists of three field books kept by G.E. Midgley. The books contain incomplete diary entries and hand drawn maps of his prospecting activities.

This accession consists of one illustrated copy of the Galena Heights Elementary School Year Book for 1987-1988. The yearbook includes images of staff and students.

The photo depicts the participants of a Game Wardens' conference held in the Yellowknife Elks Hall in 1955. In the front row, left to right: Frank McCall, Bob Douglas, Art Brown, Ward Stevens, Evan Essex, Louis Reese, R. C. (Tim) Timmins, and Kenneth Cooper. In the back row, left to right: Ernie Camsell, Art Look, P. Mandeville, Philip Bourque, O. F. (Aussie) Eliason, William Day, Graham Douglas.

Although the majority of the images were taken by Father Gathy between 1929 and 1954, a few images of Father Gathy were borrowed from collections held by the O.M.I. Archives in Fort Smith and the Sisters of Saint Joseph Archives in Mount St. Joseph, Ontario. Although the images are mainly of Yellowknife, Fort Norman and Fort Franklin, some were taken aboard the "S.S. McKenzie River". Many of the photographs depict members of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and the Grey Nuns. There are also images of Dene residents and camps in and around Fort Franklin and Fort Norman. There are a few images of children wearing rabbit skin clothing and one of mooseskin boats.

This fonds consists of 212 black and white and colour prints and negatives, 1 colour drawing, 9 postcards and 6 greeting cards taken or collected by Geddes Webster. The photographs date from 1944 to the early 1950s and most document mining sites and mining activities in the Yellowknife area. The gold mines depicted include: Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, Ltd.; Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; Akaitcho Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; Crestaurum Gold Mines, Ltd.; Discovery Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd.; North Inca Gold Mines, Ltd.; Thompson-Lundmark Gold Mines, Ltd.; and Diversified Mining Interests (Canada), Ltd. Also included are photographs of Old Town and the new town site in Yellowknife, the archaeological site near Old Fort Reliance and Dene preparing hides at Lac La Martre. Most of the images were photographed by Webster, but are included is a series of George Radisics' photographs and an album that Carl Pielsticker compiled. The postcards consist of images of Yellowknife and the greeting cards show drawings of Yellowknife.

This fonds consists of slides, photographs and maps. The slides, taken by Joseph Tyrrell, include images of northern Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Dubawnt River and Lake region, and the west coast of Hudson Bay near Chesterfield Inlet. There are also 19 black and white photographs of Yellowknife, mining camps around Yellowknife, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith and survey crews around Yellowknife Bay. The photographs appear to have been taken by members of survey teams including: A.W. Jolliffe, C.S. Lord [Clifford Symington Lord] and J.F. Henderson. There are 24 maps in total in the fonds. Map subjects include the Mackenzie, Pelly, Taltson, Slave and Peace Rivers and Ungava Bay. One map indicates the route taken by the southern party of the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1918, another illustrates the "Cruise of DGS Neptune to Hudson Bay and The Arctic Islands in 1905". There is also a series of nine separate map sheets for the Mackenzie and Yukon Basins, issued in 1880.
