Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 58. "Up the Liard River. 1939" is the caption on the back. From left to right: Milt, Stuart McLeod and Tiny—he came from out Edson way, west of Edmonton—and George Roberts. George and I were on the coal survey. I don't know [why] Stuart McLeod and Tiny are there. They were not on the coal survey.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 12: Perhaps Stuart and Tiny travelling on the Liard when they met Milt and George Roberts doing their coal survey. All four were working for Yellowknife Transport. In fact, Stuart was a co-owner of the company.

Milt's interview indicates that the coal survey was quite separate from freighting activities. Milt's diary [August 3-24] suggests the coal survey was part of the freighting operation.

WDA's Comments, 2013 July 08: Carl Falcon notes: "That black tomcat came in on the last load that came in. One of the Mounted Police guys pulled a fast one on us. Must have been a two-day-old little kitten, jet black, in a paper box. I recognized the box right away as something that didn't belong to us. I opened the box at the last load and here was that little bit of a kitten, eyes shut yet and cold as can be because up in the high elevation it's rather cool. So I took the little thing and put it in my pants pocket where it was warm. I succeeded in bringing it to the cabin and we succeeded in raising it. That cat was the biggest clown that you ever saw and would grow into the biggest tomcat you ever saw in your life. He kept the mice out of the cabin too."

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: This photo is near the confluence of the Flat and South Nahanni Rivers. RCMP Cpl. Fielding was being taken upriver by Ole Lindberg to supposedly investigate Phil powers death. Powers' death had been investigated by Duncan Martin in 1932 so it is difficult to understand why Fielding is going up again to investigate. Fielding's trip is not reported in Shaw's 1960 article "Valley of No Return" in the RCMP Quarterly 25(3): 217-229, so his trip was probably just a routine patrol trip and had nothing to do with reinvestigating Powers' death. It is unclear whether Fielding's trip was in 1933 or 1934.

this photo. Rather than include it here as well as in the interview, using it I have labelled the
buildings in a copy of this photo as 55-2.

unit that handled northern communications by radio telegraph at first and later by voice radio.
Photographer: Charlie Hansen is fairly sure this photo was made by Joe Lineham. Joe was a
HBC employee who recorded Fort Simpson during his time there (see Hansen interview for
details). His photos are recognizable by the sky because he used a filter to darken it, thus
bringing out the clouds.
WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 07: Many Fort Simpson residents had copies of this photo and
other photos in the form of postcards made by Joe Lineham. Joe apparently printed them in his
own darkroom.

WDA's Comments, 2013 July 10: Shortly after they arrived Carl Falcon initiated a systematic sampling program on the benches above Bennett Creek. Permafrost was everywhere, so the first step was to strip off the moss and vegetation from the 3 x 6 foot sample area and leave it to thaw while they explored other creek beds. However, this seems to be Bill Clark's curiosity leading him to sample an area which seemed promising to him. Bill Clark's clothes suggest this is summer but the vegetation seems snow covered in places as though it is early fall.

The back door. And there's a woodpile in front of it. Just peeking out above it is the married
quarters.
Above that is the old Hudson's Bay house. I tore that one down for them. That's a kitchen off the
back of the Hudson's Bay house that was added on to it. The interpreter, Johnny McPherson,
lived in there between the two Signal towers. The high one there was the old store just to the
right of the mast. Just to the right ofit again the nice white building was in two rooms. The
clerk-they always had a clerk-he lived in one half and we used to dance in the other half
sometimes. And I remember they used it for an Indian [Dene] house. That's what it was. The clerk lived
in one room of the Indian [Dene] house. Down to the foreground, that's a warehouse, the white building
with the blank wall. See Photo 56-2 with the buildings labelled.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 6. Bert Neeland supervised the building this barge or two barges I believed we built that spring for the free trader Joe Clark and Harry and I rode on down with them. But as you can see Harry and I are doing the whipsawing. I'm up on top here and Harry's down in the pit. Now Bert picked out the trees he wanted. He spotted these good tall spruce because he wanted thirty-six foot lumber or more but not less and he picked them. And we felled the trees and put them up on this stand and he marked them off the width he wanted and Harry and I did the sawing.

This item is the sixth part of a twelve-part Tlicho audio version of the twelve pamphlets written for WCF by Wilf Bean. The original source item was side B of a 60 minute audio cassette. The set also includes items 0106A, 0106B, 0107A, 0107B, 0108A, 0109A, 0109B, 0110A, 0110B, 0111A, and 0111B.The pamphlet title is "Guaranteed Representation".

the biggest one at the time. I can't really tell anybody's that's on there. I also see another little

WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 03: This was not captioned by Charlie but his caption from Photo 5 is
used because Photos 5 and 6 are clearly taken shortly after one another. This Aircruiser was used on the
mail run from Cooking Lake, AB to Aklavik providing there was sufficient fright and/or people to utilize
it's capacity. The mail run was not a scheduled flight in today's sense of the term, lfthere was a job to be
done on a side trip, the mail run was interrupted while the side trip was completed. (See the Carl Falcon
interview for an example of this.) The mail nm was then resumed. The small plane, a Waco ZQC-6
Custom, CF-BDJ, was in the name of RC Bishop Gabriel Breyant of Pott Smith from Mar, 8, 1937 to
Nov. 18, 1939 when it was transferred to Peace River Airways (PRA) until Jan 01, 1941. (Ellis, J.R.,
Canadian Civil Aircraft Register.) G.C.F. Dalziel was involved with PRA so theoretically this could be a
PRA plane. the plane was transferred to Mcinnis Products Corp., a fish company in Edmonton.
CF-BKV was not registered until Sep. 27, 1938 (Ellis, J. R., Canadian Civil Aircraft Register) so this
photo post-dates that. Thus, this photo most likely dates from Mar, 8, 1937 to Nov. 18, 1939 because PRA
was not set up to fly this far north (G.C.F. Dalziel interview).

WDA's Comments, 2013 Oct. 11: The location of this photo is unknown but presumably is taken at George's cabin on the Liard River between Nahanni Butte and Fort Liard. The person in the photo is unknown.

Caption on back of photo: "1941 #6. We embedded the timbers into the walls of the canyon. Packed then on our backs for 350 yds. No union and no thought of pay! Wonderful experience of sizing up a job & utilizing the goods on hand to do the job. When I first surveyed our problem, it seemed almost impossible with the tools we had on hand. However, Dr Falcon's ingenuity and my background paved the way to a very successful operation. Bill Clark"

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jun 28: Emplacement of the heavy framework logs to support the flume in the canyon is just beginning. While Bill Clark referred to Falcon as Dr. Falcon, he was not a doctor or a Ph.D.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 60. This is one of those test holes where we dug out a bunch of coal and as you can see we didn't fool around. We did dig out coal. George Roberts is sampling the coal seam.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 12: The Liard River coal survey (1939) and Mackenzie River coal survey (1940) were initiated by Yellowknife Transport. Coal cost over $600.00 per ton delivered at Aklavik and Bert Neeland at Yellowknife Transport thought that if they could locate a deposit of high quality coal close to the river bank on the Liard. or Mackenzie, they could mine it, load it onto one of their barges and sell it at a healthy profit even if the price was a third or half the $600 price. Milt and George spent the two summers locating and sampling deposits located in promising locations. Nothing ever came of it. Presumably the quality was too low and/or the war effort distracted everyone.
