This fonds consists of 513 colour slides, 8 colour prints, 2 original master sound cassettes and 2 DAT audiocassettes. The original two audiocassettes were copied to DAT circa 1995-1996. The DAT cassettes now constitute the archival masters. The two DAT audio cassettes (items :0522 and :0523) document the first meeting of the Great Slave Lake Housing Association which was held at Hay River in July, 1969. The 513 colour slides (items :0001 to :0513) and the colour prints (items :0514 to :0521) depict a variety of northern communities. Twenty of the slides (items :0366 to :0385) are copies of images taken by Sister B. Matte, a Grey Nun who worked in Rae in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of these images illustrate the social conditions, which existed in the 1960s and 1970s. A large number of images focus upon education in the north; depicting schools, adult education centres, teachers and students. There are also many images, which depict types of housing found in various communities. Subjects covered include education, housing, transportation, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police ceremony to honour Special Constables in the north, recreational activities, Caribou Carnivals in Yellowknife, Sports Day activities in Pangnirtung in 1971, and Toonik Tyme festivities in Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit) circa 1970. Communities depicted include: Arctic Bay, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay, Colville Lake, Coppermine, Detah (Dettah), Eskimo Point (Arviat), Fort Chimo, Fort Good Hope, Fort Liard, Fort McPherson, Fort Norman, Fort Providence, Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Fort Wrigley, Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit), Hall Beach, Hay River, Igloolik, Inuvik, Nahanni Butte, Norman Wells, Pangnirtung, Pelly Bay, Pond Inlet, Port Burwell, Rae-Edzo, Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay, Sachs Harbour, Spence Bay (Taloyoak), Tuktoyaktuk and Yellowknife.

This fonds consists of approximately 3,950 photographs in slide, print and negative formats, approximately 29.7 meters of textual material, 2 reels of microfilm, 1 audiocassette and 1 video reel. Approximately 450 photographs depict school facilities across the Northwest Territories, as well as other community buildings from the Northwest Territories, such as hospitals and churches. The remaining photographs are from the School Program and Development Division or the School Support Division. The collection from the School Program and Development Division consists of approximately 1,944 35-mm negatives, 138 slide images and approximately 828 reproductions of archival images. The communities of Fort McPherson, Fort Smith and Fort Franklin are represented, as well as images of elders, traditional games and activities. The reproductions of the archival images include photographs of the Perry Expedition, as well as images from the Department of Interior-Yukon and Northwest Territories Branch, which consist of images from throughout the arctic, primarily from the Keewatin Region. The images from the School Support Division consists of 871 slides that depict the following communities: Inuvik , Trout Lake, Jean Marie River, Snare Lake, Yellowknife, Fort Wrigley, Rae Edzo, Tuktoyaktuk, Tungsten, Fort Franklin, Coral Harbour, Pelly Bay, Coppermine, Pine Point, and Hay River. In addition, there are 80 slides with an accompanying audio cassette and manual from a unit entitled "Our Students, Our Future: Shaping Education in the NWT." This unit was developed in 1990 and includes images that depict students and education related activities in the Northwest Territories. Furthermore, there are 64 black and white photographs with accompanying negatives of historic buildings and sites in Fort Smith. The photographs were taken in 1986 by Chris Hanks, Sub arctic Archaeologist for the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre while he delivered an anthropology course for the Renewable Resources Technology Program at Thebacha College in Fort Smith.

The textual records generated by the Administration Division, later renamed the Directorate, consist of material dated between 1966-1989. These records consist of policy and planning files, Board of Education files, correspondence, service agreements between the department and school boards, finance reports from residential schools and school boards, reports on hearing impairment, school health projects and special needs, in addition to various committee reports and general language files. There are also files from the Baffin Board of Education, Fort Smith Region, Kitikmeot Region Education Association and the Keewatin Region Education Authority.

The bulk of the textual material was created and/or accumulated by the School Programs Development section and its predecessors the Program Services, Programs and Evaluations Branch, Education Programs and Evaluation and Linguistic Programs, which were all part of the Administration and Directorate Division, Department of Education. The records consist of administrative files, correspondence, committee reports, policy and planning files, reports and minutes from meetings; Special Education records, School program files and Linguistic program files, including workbooks, readers and curriculum material. In addition, there are records from the Assistant Director of Education regarding school policy, procedures and directives, Inuit education, pupil residences and vocational training. There are also records and files from the following: Continuing and Special Education Division, including files from Adult Education, Apprenticeship Training, Life Skills, Home Management, Vocational Training for the Handicapped, and Social and Housing Education; Advanced Education division, including files regarding the In-Service Training Program and literacy promotion; records from the Tree of Peace adult education program; records from the Director of Education; Education Recruitment; and the Professional Improvement Committee. The remaining textual material is from the Central Registry and consists of files from the Director of Education (70 block), School Programs (72 block), School Services (73 block) and College and Continuing Education (75 block). The records from the Director of Education includes files on general education, curriculum development, teacher training, conferences, aboriginal language courses, school policy, schools and residences and Superintendent of Education files for the regions. The records from School Programs and School Services consist of correspondence, publications, policies and procedures relating to school programs, curriculum, teacher evaluations, conferences and school services files. The records from the College and Continuing Education Services relate to adult education centres and programs, vocational programs, continuing and special education, group courses, conferences and workshops. In addition, there are two microfilm reels containing records from the Central Registry from the following program areas: Director of Education (70 block) and Assistant Director of Education (71 block).

This fonds also includes daily student attendance records from St. Patrick's Separate School and Sir John Franklin High School that date between 1953-1970 and were transferred directly from the schools in 1980, Treaty Member and Inuit Identification Lists, miscellaneous reports, publications and one video reel documenting "Life in a Student Residence, Grollier Hall, 1976."

This fonds also includes approximately 2 meters of published reports, curriculum resources, teaching guides, newsletters, magazines, pamphlets, published anthologies, manuals, education kits, storybooks, workbooks and handbooks created by the Department of Education dating from 1973 to 1993. The material covers a wide range of topics including teaching aides for elementary school children (workbooks, storybooks, teaching guides, kits, etc.), a large collection of Pik magazines, brochures and kits on child abuse, sexual assault and alcohol and drug awareness, apprenticeship brochures, nutrition guides and a children's cookbook, curriculum guides on science, civics, social studies and health, a needs assessment report on alternative programs for special needs, a review of Akaitcho Hall, a report on the 1971 Olympiada event, and many aboriginal language storybook readers. There is also a Social and Housing Education Program in the Mackenzie District summary from 1969.

This fonds consists of records generated by Policy and Planning Division, Community Works and Capital Planning Division, Lands Division, Sport and Recreation Division, Community Planning and Lands Division, Community Governance, the Directorate, Public Safety and the Corporate Services Division of the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs. The files from the Policy and Planning Division relate to Devolution, Privatization, Resource Community Policy, Resource Development Policy, Local Government Priorities, Assistant Deputy Minister (ADMS) Coordinating Committee, Ministers Speeches, as well as, Minister's Tours of the Baffin, Kitikmeot, Keewatin and Mackenzie Delta Regions.

The material from the Community Planning and Lands Division and Community Governance date from 1953-2012 and includes minutes and files from the following Committees: Land Use Advisory Committee, Senior Management Committee, Land Review Committee, Land Claims Working Group, Land Information System Working Group and the Federal/Territorial Land Committee. There includes files related to the Land Claims Working Group, self government negotiations and service to Status Indians, and property assessment and taxation. There is substantial documentation regarding MACA's responsibilities and efforts in Land Claims work, including a small number of cartographic records (Norman Wells only). In addition, there are various files relating to departmental acts/regulations, policies and procedures, and planning files. Also included are Annual Workplans for Community Planning (1986-1994); minutes of Community Planners Meetings (1986-1993); Annual reports re: Monitoring of the Planning Act (1990-1993) and the Lands division; copies of various policy and procedures manuals related to Community Planning; a set of completed surveys related to Solid Waste Disposal; records related to standards and criteria for capital planning, review and revisions to the water and sewage subsidy program. There is also a small group of community planning records and maps for Pond Inlet from 1987-1990. Other community planning and zoning records and maps relate to the Beaufort Delta, North Slave, Deh Cho, Sahtu, and South Slave regions. There are also operational evaluations of communities in the Beaufort Delta region. Records of a 2007 Lands Conference on the New Deal are also included.

The records from the Directorate date between 1988-2011 and consist primarily of manual, policy binders, handbooks and reports. The record include handbooks and manuals related to management of water and sanitation services, formula financing for communities, land administration training, municipal works training, local government manuals and treatment and handling of hazardous waste material, records relating to real estate licensing and the review of the territorial lottery process. Also included are transcripts of interviews with residents of Fort Rae, organizational charts for the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs and strategic planning documents for the department from 1989-1990, a service contract for Nunavut, and records relating to resource development. In addition, there are reports to the Directorate from the divisions, issue files, Social Agenda files, briefing notes, Senior Management Committee records, and Minister Responsible for Youth, Deputy Minister and Ministerial Chronos.

The records from the Corporate Affairs or Corporate Services Division date from 1977-2019 and relate to legislation development, strategic planning, job action contingency planning, emergency measures, Community Empowerment, Municipal Community Assistance Program (MCAP), a 1995 Ministers of Local Government Conference and conference hosted by MACA and the NWT Association of Municipalities, Government of the Northwest Territories Steering Committee-Pine Point, aboriginal claims and briefing notes from the 1st Session, 7th Session and 8th Session of the Legislative Assembly. There are files concerning the delivery of the community development fund and a legislative proposal to amend the Municipal Statutes Act, as well as user pay/user say initiatives. In addition, there are files from the regional office in Inuvik related to the department's involvement with the Arctic Winter Games, policy and guidelines for the Fitness Leadership Certification Program, workshop material about the Staff and Volunteer Training Program, a copy of an organizational planning tool that was produced by the department and disseminated during workshops hosted by MACA, as well as memorandum of Understanding with Arctic College concerning the Recreation Leaders Program. In addition, there are student education plans and evaluations for the Recreation Leaders Program. Records also include decision papers, legislation files related to the Area Development Act and the Municipal Statutes Amending Act, and reports on conferences. There is also a small amount of information about Fire Prevention Week.

The records from the Surveys and Mapping Division date from 1987 and relate to a review of the division.

The records from the Sport and Recreation Division date from 1978 to 2007 and include training materials for communities to develop effective recreation committies and records related to recration facility development including community based project files and policy binders. Records also include meeting minutes from 2006-2007.

Records from the Fort Smith Regional Office consist of trip reports to communities conducted by MACA staff, training initiatives being delivered by the Department, local election files, briefing material, community recreation files, and an employee orientation manual.

Records from the North Slave Regional Office consist of meeting notes, planning documents, and correspondence relating to a functional review of regional operations, as well as correspondence and a presentation relating to a strategic planning workshop.

From the Public Safety division, there are planning and committee records relating to emergency response, search and rescue, forest fire fighting, disaster assistance, safety and preparedness, as well as Memoranda of Understanding with other agencies in relation to emergency response, and lottery licensing guidelines and Hamlet of Paulatuk Lottery Licensing Bylaw. Also included are assessment appeal tribunal files and a file related to legal gambling in the NWT. From the Public Safety division's Office of the Fire Marshal, there are fire fighting training course materials as well as files related to amendments to the Fire Prevention Act.

Records from the Community Development division relate to municipal land selection and land implementation, community transfer initiatives, and community based planning.

Records from the School of Community Government relate to training programs, occupational standards and certification, and the Community Development Fund.

There are also reports related to taxation, community planning and financing municipal government.

This fonds consists of 619 colour transparencies, 36 b&w photographs and one colour photograph. Additionally, the NWT Archives created 340 digital files that were created from original 303 colour slides, 36 black and white photographs and one colour photograph that were initially loaned to the NWT Archives in 2005. The majority of the images depict the community of Aklavik and include images of the All Saints Anglican Mission and Church, All Saints Hospital, Royal Canadian Mountain Police buildings and boat "Aklavik", as well as aircraft, the Anglican school, Aklavik Post Office and many identified people from the community. Many of the images are of patients at the All Saints Hospital. There are also images of Inuvik that include buildings in the community such as the Federal School and Roman Catholic church, the hospital, Semler's store, and Mackenzie Hotel, as well as the unveiling of the Inuvik Monument by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. In addition, there are images of Fort Good Hope, Lutselk'e (Snowdrift), Detah (Dettah), Bathurst Inlet, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Reliance, Fort Rae, Herschel Island, and Reindeer Station. The images taken in 1970's and 1980's are of Yellowknife and include images of the July 1 parade, art work at the Yellowknife Gallery, Yellowknife City Hall, exhibits at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Northern United Place, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company (Con Mine), and Giant Mine.

This fonds consists of 2 cm of textual material. The material relates to the day-to-day operations of the organization from its start in 1963, to 1966. Correspondence, financial statements, annual reports, applications for loans and assistance, and product information about the Co-operative are included. The material also includes a questionnaire asking about the living conditions in Fort Franklin [Deline], and a statement of the social and economic conditions found in Fort Franklin [Deline] at that time. Also includes a copy of the report "You Take the Lead…: The First Three Years of the First Indian Co-operative", published by the Co-op in 1966.

This fonds consists of 71 photographs, 47 colour slides, one photocopy of a map showing the settlement of Hay River in 1945, 6 original sketch maps of various other communities also from 1945, and one report entitled "Report on Physical Geography Study of the Western Arctic, 1947." The photographs show various communities across the north including, Hay River, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Fort Providence, Pine Point, Tulita, Inuvik, Aklavik, Port Radium, Rankin Inlet and Yellowknife. The photographs of Hay River show dwellings and tents; however, there are also images of the meteorological station, airfield and Hudson's Bay Company. The images of Yellowknife are primarily aerial images of the town, images of Old Town, residential areas and places of business. There are also photographs of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) barracks, Con Mine, Gordon Lake Mine, Negus Mine and commercial gardens. The photographs of Port Radium show the Eldorado uranium mine. Other photographs show pipeline activity at Inuvik. The slides are also mainly aerial images, and document communities throughout the NWT and Nunavut, including Yellowknife, Fort Smith, Fort Good Hope, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Hay River and the Mackenzie river. Nunavut locations documented on slides include Cambridge Bay, Baffin Island, Mansel Island, Prince Charles Island, Boothia Peninsula and Arctic Bay. One colour slide is a picture of Tom Doornbos of Yellowknife, carrying his water pails. The report was generated from personal observations by Robinson during a visit to the western arctic in August of 1947. The majority of the report focuses on observations about Victoria Island, Prince of Wales Island, Somerset Island and the Boothia Peninsula; however, there are also notations concerning the topography from Yellowknife to Bathurst Inlet. The report includes a diary of the trip and contains discussions of the topography, mapping, geology, ice conditions, vegetation and animal life. The report was originally produced for the Federal Government, Lands and Development Services Branch, Northwest Territories and Yukon Services.

A portion of the material dating from 1992-1996 deals with the Northern Management Program (NMP) administered by the Department of Transportation in conjunction with Arctic College. The files consists of general correspondence and materials explaining the origin and purpose of the Northern Management Program.

Also included in this fonds are records from the Planning and Policy division, including Minister's Briefing Notes, Senior Management Committee meeting files, correspondence, decision and discussion papers and draft agreements concerning the negotiation between the Department of Transportation and Tulita District Land Corporation for the exchange of land at Canyon Creek.

As well, this fonds contains files from the Airports Division relating to the transfer of the Arctic Airports from the Federal Government to the GNWT. Included in these files are copies of agreements, decision papers, briefing notes and material from the Transfer Management Committee. There are also two items, a brochure celebrating the completion of highway 3 from Yellowknife to Frank's Channel, and a Department of Transportation strategy report, dated 2006 and 1990 respectively, files relating to airport safety, and electronic records regarding the management and operations of the CARS program.

Records from the Corporate Services division include files on departmental organization, personnel policy, staffing policy, an information technology strategy and a review of the department's finance and administration functions, internal publications and Senior Management Committee records. DOT submissions regarding the NWT Public Service Vehicles Act, the National Transportation Agency Review Commission and the Royal Commission on National Passenger Transportation are also included. Also, Briefing Books for the Deputy Minister for Main Estimates and the Standing Committee on Finance, as well as Briefing Notes and Options Papers are included. Departmental publications are also present in these accessions.

Records from the Directorate consist mainly of Minister and Deputy Minister chronos, as well as files relating to Senior Management Committee minutes, Transfer Management Committee minutes, the transfer of GNWT airports to communities under the Community Transfer Initiative, policies, Briefing Notes, Northern Roads Policy, Negotiated Transportation Contracts Policy, transfer of responsibilities from the federal government to the GNWT, transfer of responsibilities from the GNWT to Nunavut for division, and department strategies.

Records from the Environmental Affairs section include environmental projects and studies and reports for airports, roads, industrial projects, and contaminated sites.

This fonds consists of 189 b/w photographs and one folder of textual material dating from 1926 to 1929. Contained in a photo album, the images represent Harold Wilson and party's 1928 'Prospecting Expedition to the Northwest Coast of Hudson Bay via Great Slave Lake, Hanbury and Thelon rivers, and Return via Fort Churchill'. The textual material includes a 1929 newspaper article from the Winnipeg Free Press describing the discovery of the Hornby party by Wilson and his party the summer previous, a photocopy of a photograph of John Hornby, and an original note written by John Hornby nine months before his death. The canoe journey of the Nipissing Mining Co. Ltd. employees includes photographs taken at Waterways, Fort Chipewyan, Fort Fitzgerald, Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Fort Reliance, Chesterfield Inlet, and Churchill showing their camps, overland and coastal travel, and their fishing exploits.

The reports, typically illustrated, often include a short historical background on the mine or area, the anticipated goals of the visit, a travelogue, a site investigation report, a report on the various buildings and structures remaining, a report on equipment and machinery, a list of items salvaged, colour photographs, a list a photo identifications, hand drawn maps of the site or area, hand-coloured diagrams, copies of aerial photographs, and hand drawn renderings of buildings or floor plans.

This fonds consists of 80 b/w and colour photographs and one folder of textual material relating to the Gruben family of the Mackenzie Delta region. Dating mainly from the 1920s to the 1970s, the photographs document the people, places and activities of the Mackenzie Delta including the communities of Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Kittigaryuk, Shingle Point, and Baillie Island and the Gruben, Nasogaluak, Raddi, Pokiak, Jacob, Kikoak, Carpenter, Cockney, Wolki, and Elias families. Featured are traditional Inuvialuit clothing, including floral pattern parkas with sunburst hoods. Additional subjects include hunting, dogsledding, boats, fishing, and oil rigs. The schooner 'North Star' is also featured. The textual material includes the marriage certificate of Mary (Mercy) Talegomik and John Rubin, as well as a letter addressed to Mary Gruben from B. Sidgwick dated April 7, 1950.

This fonds consists of 21 festival programs and eight promotional posters of the Folk on the Rocks Music Festival. The programs date from 1980-2001. There was no program produced for 1986. The majority of the programs are full-colour, although a few were printed on newsprint. The colour posters date from 1994-2001.

This fonds consists of 299 colour slides, 19 colour prints and 273 black and white prints. The majority of the photographs are of Frank and Grace McCall's time spent in the Mackenzie Delta (Aklavik - Reindeer Station) in the 1940s, Yellowknife (1940s - 1970s) and Ft. Smith in the (1950s and 1960s). The series of print photographs focussing on Yellowknife include images relating to transportation, recreation, mining, and scenery. Negus Mine, Con Mine, Jolliffe Island, the Wildcat Café, water taxis, floatplanes, and cat trains are featured, along with Yellowknife residents Tom Doornbos and John Anderson Thomson. The series of print photographs focussing on Aklavik include images relating to reindeer herding, transportation, and aerial photographs. A third series of print photographs, entitled Northern Miscellaneous, covers various subjects, including a trip Frank McCall took in his capacity as Regional Administrator to communities such as Banks Island, Holman Island, Coppermine (Kugluktuk), Spence Bay (Taloyoak) and Pelly Bay to talk to residents about a Resource Program. The two textual documents are programs for the official openings of the Yellowknife United Church in 1958 and Bristol Memorial Park in 1970.

This fonds consists of approximately 35 cm of textual material comprised of correspondence and field research related to Nancy Lurie's ethnographic research with the Tłı̨chǫ (Dogrib) in Behchokǫ̀ (Rae) and Wha Ti (Lac La Martre), NWT. The correspondence dates from 1959-1963 and includes letters to and from June Helm, Susan Messerly and Nancy Lurie regarding fieldwork in Lac La Martre and Rae, as well as correspondence between Nancy Lurie and her husband Edward Lurie, written while she was doing fieldwork in 1959. In addition, there are letters from Alexis Nitsiza and Elsie Simpson that were written to Nancy Lurie while they were attending residential school in Yellowknife and in Fort Smith, as well as several handwritten notes requesting items such as sugar, tobacco and flour that were delivered to Nancy Lurie and June Helm by children in Lac La Martre. The remaining textual material consists of Lurie’s field notes and research papers from her ethnological research that was undertaken in Lac La Martre and Rae in 1959 and 1967. There are also index cards arranged by subject containing handwritten notes and observations made during Lurie’s field research.

The recording contains the remembrances of Louise Corey. The majority of the recording is in one of the Dene languages possibly Chipewyan.

The video, entitled "Arctic Challenge", is a promotional film produced by Dome Petroleum to outline their plans for the future development of northern offshore oil fields and the transportation of the oil to southern refineries. The video runs 7 minutes and 10 seconds.

This accession consists of one register entitled "General Record of Registered Letters", and was compiled by Post Office employees at Lake Harbour.

This accession consists of two black and white copy photographs of maps entitled "Survey of the Western Part of the Dominion of Canada". Various information, such as estimated populations of Manitoba, Mackenzie District, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and British Columbia in 1907, is printed around the borders of these maps.

The report, titled "Reconnaissance of Yellowknife River and Adjacent Lakes, Great Slave Lake, N.W.T., July 1 - Sept. 7, 1928", carries the name Henry L. Smyth, Jnr. on the cover. The map is of "Yellowknife River and adjacent lakes from Yellowknife Village north to the third portage," is also dated July 1-September 7, 1928, and was drawn by Mr. Smyth. Scale 1" to 4,000 feet. The present day site of Detah is indicated on the map as being Yellowknife Village. Mineral deposits in the area have been annotated onto the map.

This accession consists of a map titled "A Sketch Map of the Great Bear Lake Region in the Mackenzie District explored by J. Mackintosh Bell 1900", dated May 13, 1901 and apparently published by the Royal Geographic Society in its Geographical Journal of 1901.

It contains the programme for the musical "Two Hands and For Ever", which was produced and written by Robin Beaumont and Graham Hall in 1979, with music and lyrics by Robin Beaumont. The programme contains short biographical sketches on many of the workers and performers of this musical.

Records consist of translations of interviews with Helen Kalvak, an Inuit artist from Holman. Born in 1901, Helen Kalvak grew up with her parents living off the land in the Holman region. Her drawings are depictions of her memories. Many are inspired by shamanism and ancient legends. It is believed that the interviews were carried out by Father Tardy, an Oblate missionary who lived in Holman for many years and who uncovered Helen Kalvak's talent. The interviews may have been conducted in the 1960s.

This accession consists of three colour slides: an aerial view of Tuktoyaktuk in 1952, and two slides of the Hudson's Bay Company ship "Fort Hearne" (n.d.).

Records include photographs taken in Fort Franklin during 1953 and 1954. Images of people including: Cecelia Cleary, Mary Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kenny, and Mr. and Mrs. Takazo. Some of the people depicted are unidentified.
