WDA's Comments, 2013 July 01: Carl Falcon notes, "we took in six thousand eight hundred pounds of supplies... The first plane [a Bellanca Aircruiser] took in a load of thirty-six hundred pounds and the rest was brought in a smaller plane [this Norseman] in two additional loads." Here the Norseman starts its take-off run.

Charlie's photo description: There's Andy's place. That's the one Andy built. I see he's already got the
hall. The hall is added on later and that was milled lumber [as opposed to whip-sawn lumber in the hotel
itself, sawn by Andy Whittington alone.]. The hall interior was panelled with fir plywood but it was the
old fashioned kind made with a non-waterproof glue. It used to get damp in there in the winter because
you wouldn't have a fire. It would frost up and it would get damp and in a couple of places it was
beginning to come apait above the four feet level. It had a ten-foot ceiling. He had the old-fashioned
beaver board and that he also had on the ceiling. It was forty-eight feet by twenty-eight, just the dance
hall. It had a fir floor and it was known as the best dance floor in the Northwest Territories for many
years; the only dance floor and the best. The hotel is ... the lunchroom was thirty-eight feet inside over to
the stairway. No, the dance hall is longer than the hotel.
To the right of the hotel we got old Bud Alley's trading post Next to that is Bud Alley's living quarters,
and then we have Ginger's [Isisdore Villeneuve].
And past him comes Old Joe Villeneuve's house, although it's seemingly set the other way.

Photographer: likely Joe Lineham, a HBC employee, who recorded Fort Simpson during his time there
(see Hansen interview for details). His photos are recognizable by the sky because he used a filter to
darken it, thus bringing out the clouds.
WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 08: When he retired Andy sold the hotel to Charlie (1957) and Charlie
ran it until about 1962-63. The interesting transfer of ownership from Andy to Charlie is in the interview.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: Emerance Paquette is Alvin LaFlair's mother. Alvin was born out of wedlock to Jack LaFlair when Emerance was his housekeeper. Emerance was Jack's housekeeper until he died, probably of a heart attack. Mrs. McLeod's maiden name was Browning

Charlie's photo description: Andy Whittington's hotel. That was taken before my time. All
that built on thing there was his summer kitchen with that big window. Later they had a little
house on top there. And you see the barrel? That was before he got a well I guess because he
used to carry river water up and pour it in there. You get sand in it and then it drained through a
little pipe into a barrel to clear it up.

It's right at the upper end of the island above the buildings and Indians [Dene] and Whites alike very often camped there when they come down river for some reason. There's the Mackenzie on the extreme left and Liard. coming in across the photograph.
