C-185 Crash Trout Lake [Sambaa K'e]. A Cessna 185 owned by Arctic Air Ltd (Pete Cowie owned the firm then) crashed Dec 17, 1969 on the return leg of a charter from Fort Simpson to Trout Lake to drop off passengers. The sole occupant, the pilot Joe Schmitz of Fort Simpson, was killed. Parts of the wreckage can be seen in the photo several hundred feet north of the shoreline towards the left of the picture. The wreckage in no longer visible as most has been removed. The story is that the pilot saw wolves on the lake on the trip from FS [Fort Simpson] and told the passenger, Joe Punch, that he was going to buzz the wolves on the way back to FS. Speculation was that Joe Schmitz did buzz the wolves but may have got 'tunnel vision' and did not see the approaching shoreline and trees until the last moment. In attempt to avoid the trees he may have stalled the aircraft. Joe was married to Gisela Schmitz who was the owner of the FS Liquor Store for many years. They had immigrated to Canada from Germany after the war. They are both buried in the FS Cemetery adjacent to the town airstrip. [Aerial view of a treed area close to a shoreline. The remains of an airplane crash are visible in the bottom left of the frame.]

Near Providence. Looking upstream on the Mackenzie River to Mills Lake on the river. On the right bank you can make out an old airstrip. This strip was built during WW2 [World War II] as part of the supply line to Norman Wells. The oil field there was being developed to supply fuel to Whitehorse via the Canol Pipeline.
