N.W. [northwest] YK [Yellowknife] 1977 Pilot Ray Taylor Canso. The Cansos landed on a lake some 40 miles nw of Yellowknife and remained on standby in case the fire got more active. Ray Taylor was the Captain of this Canso. He was from Newfoundland as were a number of the Avalon Aviation Canso pilots including Carl Clouter and Terry Oake. [Canso airplane sitting on the water. Over Great Slave 1978. CF-CRR was delayed deploying to Yellowknife for the 1978 fire season due to a training accident at Sylvan Lake near Red Deer. The aircraft water looped and the right wing had to be replaced. Bob Murdoch found someone with spare Canso wings from the air force in Edmonton. Al Jasman Pine Point Crew Rest. The 2 Cansos based in Yellowknife had a Cessna 185 amphib [amphibious] birddog as part of the group. 1978 and 1979 Al Jasmine of Alberta had the contract with his aircraft. Yellowknife, T. [Turbo] Beaver Ptarmigan Airways. C-FRDA deHavilland Turbo-Beaver taking off in Yellowknife Bay. Prior to Ptarmigan Airways owning this aircraft it was owned by Arctic Air Ltd and flew out of Fort Simpson and Fort Nelson. Norseman SAN Snye F. [Fort] Simpson Late 1970's Simpson Air CFSAN. Simpson Air (the Tweeds) operated this Norseman for a number of years. In this case it was put on straight skis to haul fuel drums to Trout Lake. The aircraft was severely damaged during a rejected takeoff from the Town Strip in 1982. The pilot attempted to takeoff without clearing snow off the wings first. When he realized that it was not going to fly he rejected the takeoff. One brake was not working properly so the aircraft exited the runway into the ditch. [Simpson Air's Norseman (call number C-FSAN) sits on skis in the snow.]

Pilatus Porter Wrigley, NWT. Same as slide 22-C-FWZO Pilatus Turbo-Porter in the ice on the Mackenzie River directly below the Wrigley Airport. The aircraft had been leased from a Springbank, AB firm and was being operated by Simpson Air when the engine failed on a flight into Wrigley. The pilot Pete Cowie landed it safely on the river and beached it on the shore. No attempt was made to remove the aircraft until freeze-up started one Sunday in November. The aircraft floats had been damaged when the ice moved the aircraft. Mansell Paterson and Doug Rowsome were able to eventually remove the aircraft to the airport with a cat where it was disassembled and trucked to Calgary. Bristol Freighter Wardair, YK [Yellowknife] 1977. A Wardair Bristol freighter was the first aircraft to land at the geographic north pole piloted by Don Braun. Wardair lost a Bristol at Hay River when the load of siding for the YK courthouse shifted on takeoff and the aircraft then crashed. DC-3 F.S. [Fort Simpson] Arctic Air DC-3 sched [scheduled flight] taxiing on the Fort Simpson Island Airport fall 1973. Arctic Air ran a sched flight several times a week from Fort Nelson-Fort Liard- Fort Simpson and return. There was no road into Fort Laird [Liard] at this time. The road into Fort Simpson had just opened in 1972. The opening was officiated over by Jean Chretien then Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs.
