This accession consists of one 16 mm film reel of the 1948 National Film Board of Canada film "Yellowknife, Canada", and one copy of the film on Umatic videocassette. The images in the film include views of Yellowknife, mining, the pouring of a gold brick, and the Snare River Power Dam.

Records include images documenting the official opening of the Snare River Power Development. Item :0001 shows the guests of the ceremony outside the main hydro building. Item :0002 shows dignitaries including: F. Fraser, District Administrator of the NWT; J.W. Wardle, Chairman of the NWT Power Corporation; K. Muir of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines; and A.F. Totzke, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Yellowknife Administrative District.

This fonds consists of about 200,000 photographic negatives (mostly black and white with some colour) produced by the Native Press and its successors between 1971 and 1993 and contact sheets produced from the negatives.

The fonds also includes six C-60 audiocassette recordings containing samples of the Native Communications Society's (NCS) Indigenous language programming. In 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, NCS successfully applied to Community Programs for financial assistance to develop Indigenous language radio programming. Dene language lessons and elders telling stories and legends over CKNM radio were part of the radio programming.

Also included are 11 posters produced by NCS circa 1981-1982. One series of five posters is titled 'Our Elders Speak' and depicts traditional lifeways (hunting, fishing and attending a Dene feast), while a second series of posters features text and images that describe the history, objectives and functions of six Indigenous organizations in the NWT: NCS, NWT Metis Association, Dene Nation, NWT Native Women's Association, NWT Native Court Worker's Association, and the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

This fonds consists of one reel of colour 8 mm film (original master) of what was likely the Native Women's Association of the NWT first conference, held in July 1977. The film, approximately 175 feet in length, runs ten minutes. The film was transferred to Betacam (archival master) in 1997.

Images appear to be primarily from the Aklavik and Mackenzie Delta regions. Images include views of residential schools, school children, trapping cabins, dog sleds, furs and schooners. Images may include residential school in Hay River.

Records include photographs of the community of Holman. Photographs depict views of both the Anglican and Catholic Churches and a museum collection of artifacts.

Photographs relate to Nicholas Tuele's work at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Images were taken in his role to travel to NWT communities as Museum Advisor in the early 1980s. Images depict several communities and trips that he took including visits to Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay), Tulita (Fort Norman), Délı̨ne (Fort Franklin) and Behchokǫ̨̨̀̀̀ (Rae-Edzo). Some photos are documentation of the Tłı̨chǫ Music Project.

The majority of the photographs depict employees of Con Mine, as well as equipment and buildings at Con Mine in Yellowknife. In addition, there is an image of Henry Busse and the Wildcat Cafe.

This fonds consists of 92 photographs and 70 audio reels (original master) copied from records loaned to the NWT Archives by Nick Sibbeston and 71 sound CDs (archival master). The original Sibbeston family photographs believed to date from the 1930s to the 1960s, feature the Fort Simpson area although few of the images have identifications. The original audio recordings probably all date from the 1970s and include episodes of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) program "Dene Gonde" and recordings of the General Assembly of the Metis Association of the Northwest Territories in Fort Providence during the fall of 1976.

Records consist of songs, stories and interview transcripts collected by ethnomusicologist Nicole Beaudry in the Sahtu communities of Deline, Tulita and Fort Good Hope in 1988-1992.

Photographs depict aerial views of Yellowknife, the Con Mine camp, the Athabasca River and Fort Smith, as well as additional views of the Royal Canadian Air Force station at Yellowknife, the Con Mine camp, the Wildcat Café, a portrait of General McNaughton, and the "St. Roch" in Cambridge Bay.

This collection consists of 0.1 cm of textual records and one map. The textual records detail Noel Wright's observations on the information contained in the map, entitled "British Colonies in North America".

This fonds consists of 163 photographs (47 colour and 11 black and white copy negatives and 105 copy colour transparencies), 111 maps and map fragments and 20 cm of textual material. The 58 copy negatives and Simmons's journal document the construction of a mooseskin boat and its use. The boat was constructed between May 22 and 28, 1968, on the Gravel (Keele) River and taken down to Fort Norman (Tulita). People identified in the images include George and Vivian Pelissey, Gabe Etchinelle, Madeline Karcaji, Fred Andrew, and Jonas McCauley. The 105 colour transparencies date from 1967 through 1980 and depicts aboriginal life in the Mackenzie Mountain region including: caribou hunting, work on a moose hide boat, drying meat, fishing, camps, and Simmons's work with Dall's Sheep. The images includes views of the Moose Horn (Mountain) River, Caribou Flats by the Gravel River, Drum (Wrigley) Lake, and Punk Mountain. Included in the images are views of Gabriel Etchinelle, Jonas McCauley, Vivian McCauley, George Pelissey, Perry Linton, Leon Andrew, Jimmy Mendo, Maurice Mento, Cecile Hatchelle, Madeline Karkagie, Stella Mendo, Joe Blondin, David Yallee, Alfred Lennie and Gordon Yakelaya.

Also included in this fonds are a handwritten and typed English translation of the French article "Les Chitra-Gottineke" by Jean Michea, published in the National Museum of Canada Bulletin No. 190, "Contributions to Anthropology, Part II", 1960. Muriel Cooper, wife of Steve Cooper, Park Warden at Nahanni Butte, did the translation. The 111 maps and map fragments feature communities, lakes, rivers, canyons and mountain ranges from Fort Simpson up to the Mackenzie Delta region, and including the Yukon - NWT border. The field notes that accompany the maps include a 32 page typewritten gazetteer, as well as the handwritten notes for the gazetteer. There are also handwritten lists recording information about traditional place names of features in the Mackenzie Mountains. Simmons informants included Gabriel Etchinelle, Madeline Karkagie, George Pellissey, Vivian McCauley,and Maurice and Stella Mendo. The place names were written in a 'folk' phonetic form but a few are written by the elders are in syllabics. Files include research notes, field notes, drafts of papers and correspondence related to his studies of Dall's sheep in the Mackenzie Mountains in the 1970s, and correspondence with anthropologists such as Beryl Gillespie.

20 of the photographs document mineral exploration at Great Bear Lake 1928-1932; the remaining 11 photographs feature Baker Lake and Chesterfield Inlet in 1928.

This fonds consists of 709 black and white photographs and approximately 20 cm of textual material relating to Norman Robinson's travels in the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Ireland between 1919-1940. The photographs are mounted in nine journals which contain narrative about Robinson's work in the Northwest Territories as a trapper and guide; his work in British Columbia as a Game Warden and two years spent in Ireland. In addition, there are two original letters that Robinson wrote to his mother while he was guiding a Survey Party in the Northwest Territories in 1924, two notebooks which contain transcribed letters that Robinson wrote to his family in Ireland between 1919-1922 and transcriptions of three narratives written by Norman Robinson.

Records include photographs of the Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines Limited property at Morris Lake, and a variety of aircraft such as the Gypsy Moth, Bellanca Air Cruiser, and a Biplane among others in Yellowknife and at Giauque Lake. There are also photographs of Norman W. Byrne, his wife Rose, and his son Donald.

This accession consists of one newsletter entitled "Echo 1967" which was produced by the students at the Federal Day School in Norman Wells. The newsletter (dated January 13, 1967) contains school-related items and items pertaining to the community. There are lists of community events for the upcoming month, birth announcements, a cartoon, an extract from the Liquor Ordinance, and community residents' opinions on Confederation and the future of Canada. The newsletter was originally created as part of the school's contribution to the NWT Centennial celebrations.

Records include photographs of the Norn family taken at Hay River or in the Hay River area dating from roughly 1910 to 1940. A photograph of a picnic scene was taken in the 1960s. Several of the photographs feature teepees indicative of Dene dwellings from the period.

This fonds consists of 217 colour slides taken by Dr. Norris Hunt in 1968-1969. The photographs include images from Tuktoyaktuk, Aklavik, Arctic Red River (Tsiigehtchic), Holman Island, Cape Parry, Inuvik and the surrounding area. There are photographs of the DEW Line site and geological features such as pingos. There are images of nurses and physicians, medical evacuations, facilities and hospital patients, including images of Dr. Hunt instructing students in a classroom setting. There are photographs of the ski team and cross country skiers in Inuvik. There are photographs depicting events at the Miss Ice Worm pageant. There are aerial images of the area and photographs of typical housing and utilidors in Inuvik. There are unidentified photographs of people from the communities.

This accession consists of photographs of Yellowknife and the surrounding area. Images include mine headframes and buildings, the Frank Channel and Yellowknife River bridges, parachutists, and a 1967 Canada Day Parade in Yellowknife.

Records include a map produced by the Department of National Defence for Air North West Air Command Construction Engineering Branch. It illustrates Logging Operations in Sawmill Bay, which is located on the south eastern show of Great Bear Lake. The map depicts logging zones in the near area. Eldorado Mine is also situated on the map.

Records consist of a report and booklet about the T.E.S.T. Ski Program, a booklet and program for the Top of the World Ski Championships, a booklet for the Northern Games, and a program for Caribou Carnival. They were collected by Lorna Clement during her time in various communities of the Northwest Territories.

Records include a film produced by the National Film Board of Canada for the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. The 14 minute film provides a look at Sir John Franklin Vocational School in 1961. The film portrays the experiences of Charlie Oogotook and his efforts to adjust to life in Yellowknife and the classroom. Glimpses of other aspects of life at school are also offered including: recreational and social activities, as well as the relationships between students and teachers of differing backgrounds.

The first cassette contains an interview with Norma Stedman and Wyn Manifold who taught in the North during the 1950's and 1960's. The second cassette is an interview with Norman Simmons who discusses teaching school in Cape Dorset between 1948-1950. The third cassette contains a discussion about education in the North during the 1960s. The interviewer and subject are unknown. The fourth cassette contains a narration by Cathy McGregor about moose hide tanning in Nahanni Butte.
