WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 04: The Roman Catholic Church owned this Bellanca through
RC Episcopal Corp. of the Mackenzie. Bishop Gabriel Breynat of Port Smith had a Waco ZQC-6
registered in his own name from Mar. 08, 1937 to Nov 18, 1939 (Ellis, J.R., Canadian Civil
Aircraft Registry). The Bellanca 31-42 Pacemaker in this photo was owned by the RC Episcopal
Corp. of the Mackenzie from July 03, 1939 until August 23, 1940. In his book, (Flying Bishop,
50 years in the Canadian Far North, Burns, 1955.) Breynat mentions both planes, but he seems
not to have flown them himself. He calls this plane Sancta Maria in the book but Santa Maria is
the name in the photo The person is probably checking a gas burning pot or pots (stoves) under
the engine cover (see photos 1 and 7 for more explanation). All people are unidentified.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Oct. 12: They hardly look like soldiers but they had to learn to adapt to the cold. These two appear to be doing so although their outfits are hardly conventional compared to the individuals on the right and left.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 14. Is a picture of the Butte area from out on the water Poole's shack (with its leanto) in the foreground on the extreme left. I still do not remember who lived in the cabin beside Poole's. Probably empty. We built this for Arthur George or helped him. Next to it again is Diamond C and then as you can see there were tents scattered, three tents. Down in the water we have the RCF survey planes. There were two of them up here to do a survey of the Nahanni and the Flat River and up around McMillan Lake. There is a Hudson Bay boat on her way to Fort Nelson, Fort Liard and Nelson Forks. I don't know the tug. It could be the Dease Lake. It's got two barges in front of it. I still can't see Jack LaFlair's place. It's along the bank. Jack liked to be a little bit away and I don't blame him.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 11: The summer of 1934 RCAF took the first aerial photos in the South Nahanni watershed under the command of Flight Lieutenant C. L. Trecarten. Eric Fry from the National Topographic Survey [NTS] did the necessary triangulation work. They worked out of Macmillan Lake, Nahanni Butte and possibly elsewhere. The RCAF pilots clandestinely flew in Milt Campbell and Harry Vandale in return for them clandestinely staking claims for them on Bennett Creek. Apparently Eric Fry was not part of this deception.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: The completed flume carrying Bennett Creek over and beyond the pothole. The bulkhead, of vertical (right) and horizontal (left) tongue and groove Douglas Fir boards that were flown in just for this purpose was the last thing to be finished and it diverted Bennett Creek into the flume. The work tent was just beyond the bottom of the flume.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar 04: In the summer of 1937 or 1938, this HBC barge loaded
with freight for Aklavik and the Arctic coast hit a rock near Green Island about 20 km south of
Fort Simpson and sank. Much was rendered unusable. The Bay salvaged what they could and
Fort Simpson residents helped themselves to what was left. The following spring the ice took the
barge slightly further downstream, pretty much wrecking it. Charlie salvaged a quantity of metal
and timbers from the barge and subsequently used it to build sleighs for hauling wood and ice
and for repairing his sawmill.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar 04: It was a Dene tradition to hunt beaver each spring. The
beaver were shot in the head, usually from a canoe. The hunter had to be quick to retrieve the
beaver before it sank. The animal was skinned and the hide was stretched and dried on the stick
frames seen in this photo. The carcass provided a welcome supply of fresh meat after an often
hard winter. Beaver is a dark, moist tasty meat. I don't recognize the person.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar 04: The person is skinning one beaver and a second awaits
skinning to the right. People travelled a lot as they hunted beaver and usually the camps were
very simple, as in this photo. The bugs were usually not out in the early part of the season. The
Milt Campbell interview has good descriptions of the spring beaver hunt in the Nahanni country.
It was not an easy or comfortable life but those with real bush skills overcame bugs, late wet
snowstorms and rain, all the while travelling by foot across mountains and down creeks,
depending on the daily hunt to feed themselves.
