Fire at Sawmill Bay, Gt. Bea [Great Bear] Lake. Summer 79. The Yellowknife Canso group flew up to work a fire just west of the fishing lodge located at the old Sawmill Bay camp. To conserve fuel we landed and parked on the shore for several hours waiting for the fire behaviour to settle down before working the fire into the evening. On the return flight to Yellowknife in the evening we stopped at the Terra Mine strip at Camsell River for fuel. [Two of Avalon Aviation Ltd's Canso airplanes sit in the water along the shoreline. Tanker Base Yellowknife 79. The new (current 2020) Yellowknife Tanker Base that opened spring of 1978. Built by DIAND when the Feds ran the fire program. The original base was the lot between the RCMP hangar and NWT Air (First Air) hangar. [Two tanks sit on gravel near a tarmac. Five planes are parked near the tanks.]
