WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 04: Loading the plane and seeing people off. The Roman
Catholic Church owned this Bellanca through RC Episcopal Corporation of the Mackenzie.
Bishop Gabriel Breynat of Fort Smith had a Waco ZQC-6 registered in his own name from Mar.
08, 1937 to Nov 18, 1939 (Ellis, J.R., Canadian Civil Aircraft Registry). The Bellanca 31-42
Pacemaker in this photo was owned by the RC Episcopal Corp. of the Mackenzie from July 03,
1939 until August 23, 1940. In his book, (Flying Bishop, 50 years in the Canadian Far North,
Burns, 1955.) Breynat mentions both planes, but he seems not to have flown them himself. He
calls this plane Sancta Maria in the book but Santa Maria is the name painted on the plane in the
photo.
I am unable to identify anyone in this photo.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: According to an article in Northern News Services (http://www.nnsl.com/frames/newspapers/2011-05/may12_11lin.html) Edwin was born 1929 Jun 16. In this photo he looks to be in his late teens or 20s, thus placing this photo in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 17. A caption on the back says "McMillan Lake named after pilot S. McMillan." That's McMillan Lake where we landed in the summer of '34 in the latter part of August and met Billy Clark and Gus Kraus. We waited there for a month for Wop May. He was going to bring us in more supplies. I think maybe a couple of trips. One for Billy and Gus and one for Harry and myself. At the end of September still no Wop and we were out of food. We hunted continually. Someone stayed in camp in case the plane came in but the three of us hunted. We hunted and we didn't turn up a track so by the end of September we were just about out of food again. Enough food to keep two men going probably to Christmas but not any longer and so Harry and I were elected to go out. We went down about twenty-five miles to the Flat River below the rapids. We built a raft. We thought we were through the rapids however we were still two or three miles up and we wrecked the thing.

In the McMillan Lake picture that is a tent that Gus put up. And that was the tent where Dalziel come in from Dease Lake, came right across country. Struck there in February. Gus just about froze to death and Dal slept quite comfortable with just half a blanket. And Dal traded Snoodles off, a little black pup to Gus, for some food to go on.

This item is the fifth part of a twenty-nine-part recording of a portion of a Metis Association Board meeting, held ca. September 1974 in Fort Resolution. The original source item is side A of a 40 minute audio cassette. The meeting also includes items CN-475A, CN-475B, CN-476A, CN-476B, CN-248B, CN-23A, CN-23B, CN-249A, CN-249B, CN-250A, CN-250B, CN-251A, CN-251B, CN-252A, CN-252B, CN-477A, CN-477B, CN-253A, CN-253B, CN-478A, CN-478B, CN-343A, CN-343B, CN-254A, CN-254B, CN-255A, CN-255B, and CN-256A. This portion of the meeting includes discussions with guest presenter Norm Simmons from the Canadian Wildlife Service. The discussions centre around a panel for the establishment of protected sites facilitated by the Canadian Wildlife Services. Norm Simmons urges the Metis Association to give their approval in principle and appoint representatives to the panel. The Board appoints Mike Beaulieu and Matthew Fraser as the representatives and indicates their desire for a report to be sent to individual Board members for approval. The Board then asks to make use of Norm Simmons' expertise and knowledge regarding hunting and fishing licenses and the discussion shifts in that direction. The recording is sometimes difficult to follow as many people talk over each other, some voices are quiet, and there is some background noise. The recording ends abruptly.

This recording includes sides A and B of the tape.

Caption on back of photo: "#17. 1941 Priming the pump for the morning workout in draining hole beneath falls. Took a ½ hour - 3 " outlet. Sluice box built inside flume has a manual opening and closing device. We built it with B. C. fir in 12 foot long sections tapered to fit each other. Bill Clark"

Caption Source: Bill Clark

Photographer: Carl Falcon, print from copy negative

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: The long arduous work of emptying the pothole beneath the flume began by pumping the water down to a level where they could begin scooping gravel out from between large boulders which occupied much of the hole. Some water constantly seeped in and had to be pumped out so they could continue working. The large boulders could neither be lifted out nor blasted out (wreck the flume), so they had to wedge the boulders in place with logs before wiggling down between them to get lower. Bill Clark's small size was a decided advantage in this dangerous chore. Meanwhile freezing conditions arrived before the hole was completely cleaned out. It must have been wet, very cold, unpleasant work. The first chore each morning was to pump out the water that had accumulated overnight. The hole was completely emptied before Oct 13 when Falcon radioed out, "Completed our big job the result is nil." In his Interview Falcon states that hey did not get even one colour of gold. What a crushing disappointment.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar 04: Person unknown to me. The lady on the left appears similar
to Jim Cree's wife in Milt Campbell's Photo 76. Therefore the left lady here could be a younger
Mrs. Cree which would mean this photo was taken in early to mid 1930s since Milt's photo is ca.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar 04: Persons unknown to me. These ladies appear to be sitting in
front of an RC Mission building in Fort Simpson. It may be the generator building. It looks like a
bit the hospital may be showing over the corner of the roof.
