Anna's Photo Description: Anna Lindberg, Jim [surname unknown], Mrs. Drumming by US Army cabin at Fort Simpson airport, n.d.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: Anna could not remember Jim's surname.
When the US Army built Fort Simpson Airport in 1942-43 they built log cabins for living in rather than use their tents. Charlie Hansen and Milt Campbell describe this in their interviews and both have photos of these buildings in nearly new condition.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 04: The Roman Catholic Church owned this Bellanca through
RC Episcopal Corporation of the Mackenzie. Bishop Gabriel Breynat of Fort Smith had a Waco
ZQC-6 registered in his own name from Mar. 08, 1937 to Nov 18, 1939 (Ellis, J.R., Canadian
Civil Aircraft Registry). The Bellanca 31-42 Pacemaker in this photo was owned by the RC
Episcopal Corp. of the Mackenzie from July 03, 1939 until August 23, 1940. In his book,
(Flying Bishop, 50 years in the Canadian Far North, Burns, 1955.) Breynat mentions both
planes, but he seems not to have flown them himself. He calls this plane Sancta Maria in the
book but Santa Maria is the name painted on the plane in the photo. The spread out engine cover
indicates that a gas burning pot (stove) or pots is under heating the engine for an easier start.
The person with the Thermos is probably Nora McKay based on a comparison to her in Photo
41.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Oct. 12: This photo is scary. Will this Fairchild FC-2W2 be able to take off with slush-ice running in the river? The wings and tail would have to be thoroughly cleaned of all snow and ice before a takeoff could be attempted. Somebody is pushing the limits being on floats in this country at the end of October, especially in 1938, before the age of significant global warming.
Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 18. This here is just like going home. This is Bennett Creek taken from up near the head. As you can see I'm up on a high ridge to the to the left of the creek going up and you can see the mountains on the far side and in later years the tungsten mine was located way up the valley.
Photographer: Milton J. Campbell
WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 11: Milt has mistaken the Irvine Creek trough for the Flat River valley leading up to Tungsten. At one point the upper South Nahanni flowed down the Irvine Creek trough across the photo from right to left in today's Flat River valley and over into the Liard River drainage.
Cold air, being more dense than warmer air, drained down into the valley bottoms. Animals such as moose knew this very well and they positioned themselves in the forest toward the top of the treed valley sides. Gus Kraus describes having to learn to hunt moose up higher where the air was slightly warmer. The country near treeline is prime marten habitat and therefore prime trapping country.

This item is the sixth part of a twenty-nine-part recording of a portion of a Metis Association Board meeting, held ca. September 1974 in Fort Resolution. The original source item is side B of a 40 minute audio cassette. The meeting also includes items CN-475A, CN-475B, CN-476A, CN-476B, CN-248A, CN-23A, CN-23B, CN-249A, CN-249B, CN-250A, CN-250B, CN-251A, CN-251B, CN-252A, CN-252B, CN-477A, CN-477B, CN-253A, CN-253B, CN-478A, CN-478B, CN-343A, CN-343B, CN-254A, CN-254B, CN-255A, CN-255B, and CN-256A. This portion of the meeting continues the discussion on licenses, in particular the new Migratory Bird permits, the uneven communication of requirements for General Hunting Licence holders, reduction of hunting rights in National Parks, the cancellation of General Hunting Licences, and what they ought to do about all these issues including meeting with officials, gaining representation on regulation management committees, and making resolutions. Guest presenter Norm Simmons from the Canadian Wildlife Service provides some suggestions. There is some background noise on the recording. The recording ends abruptly.
This recording includes sides A and B of the tape.

Caption on back of photo: "#18. 1941 Pump working nicely. Creek at left is quite dry. Force of water in flume is such as to sweep one off his feet if not grasping some strong support. Bill Clark."

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: The bottom end of the flume before its canvas was removed. Before they left, the bulkhead was dynamited out to allow Bennett Creek to return to its natural course in the hopes of keeping the flume intact for possible future work. They never came back. Heavy fall rains produced turbulence and spray which froze over everything. Note the sluice box on the left of flume. Just enough water was diverted into the sluice box to operate it. Jean Dumont is standing at the head of the sluice box.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: According to an article in Northern News Services (http://www.nnsl.com/frames/newspapers/2011-05/may12_11lin.html) Edwin was born 1929 Jun 16. In this photo he looks to be 9-10 years old, thus placing this photo in the late 1930s.
