This post [Fort Fitzgerald] is 250 air miles from Fort McMurray. It is the first terminal of the Hudson's Bay steamers in the summer time. There is a 16 mile portage necessary to negotiate the river at this point on account of the rapids. Below is a picture of Pilot Gilbert taking off with mail for the north.
