This fonds consists of one diary beginning in June 1933 and concluding in August 1934. The diary provides a daily account of John Nicholson's prospecting activities and work transporting goods to and from prospecting camps in the Great Bear Lake region. He was most active in the southeast region of the lake, particularly in the Sawmill Bay area. Included in the middle of the diary is a cash account listing for the Camsell River Mineral Syndicate.

This fonds consists of photographs, primarily of steamships on the Mackenzie river, including the "Northland Echo" and "Distributor" as well as views of Aklavik. There is also one undated map titled "Proposed Boundary--Mackenzie Territory."

This fonds consists of 103 negatives and 4 prints duplicated from a photo album of images that were taken in 1920 and 1921. The original photographs were believed to have been collected by Hal Evarts, during a trip from northern Alberta to the Mackenzie River. He may have been the photographer for some of the pictures, although several of the images were available as postcards. The images include the settlements of Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Fort Providence, Hay River, Fort Norman, Arctic Red River, Fort Good Hope, Fort Resolution and Norman Wells; Inuit and Dene people; Peel River camp; Roman Catholic and Anglican Missions; Imperial Oil Ltd. airplanes; and river transportation, including images of the M.V. "Lady Markworth," S.S. "Northern Trader," S.S. 'Distributor," S.S. "Northland Pioneer," and the S.S. "Mackenzie River."

This fonds consists of 34 photographs taken by Ernest Cote during the summers of 1936 and 1937. The images include views of early construction in Yellowknife; bush pilots Stan McMillan and Matt Berry; Northern Transportation Ltd. boats, facilities and personnel; as well as Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and Signals Corps personnel. Also included in the fonds is a copy of the Northern Transportation Company, Ltd. rates for the summer of 1937 and an illustrated Christmas card from Matt Berry.

This fonds consists of 94 black and white interpositives copied from the original negatives. Most of the images depict scenes in and around Tsiigehtchic (Arctic Red River) and Aklavik. There are also photographs taken in Tuktoyaktuk, Hay River, Reindeer Station, Fort McPherson and Fort Simpson. The fonds contains images of Nap Norbert's children, his brothers and sisters. In addition, there are images of community buildings in Tsiigetchic, the hospital and school at Aklavik, and the community dance hall in Fort McPherson. There are also a number of images of barges and tugs, including the "Pelican Rapids" that operated on the Mackenzie River.

The photographs in this fonds document multiple trips down the Mackenzie River (Dehcho) on both the S.S. Mackenzie River and the S.S. Distributor. The images document the communities visited along the river, and in particular the barge supply route for the Canol Project from Waterways (Alberta) to Norman Wells (NWT) and members of the United States Army 388th Engineer Battalion working on the pipeline project.

This fonds consists of 43 black and white photographic prints taken in and around Yellowknife. The images show people including James Ayrhart, his wife Doris McGill, Geddes Webster and Cam Wallbridge, as well as places in Yellowknife such as the Liquor Store, Mining Recorders Office and Yellowknife Hotel. There are also images of prospecting camps and various views of Mr. Ayrhart's DC3, the Yellowknife Express. Also included in the accession are two autobiographical accounts of some of Mr. Ayrhart's experiences in the Northwest Territories. One contains identifications for some of the photographs; the other concerns the purchase and sale of the Yellowknife Express.

This fonds consists of 5 cm of textual records, 346 photographs (colour slides), 6 reels of film (16mm original masters), 13 pieces of film, and 1 Umatic videocassette (archival master). The textual records consist of two bound volumes, one a diary documenting research and survey work, and the other a vessel log. The textual records also include a folder containing narration intented for one or two of the film reels. The photographs depict members of the survey crew and the Local Aklavik Advisory Committee at work during the initial survey and the later construction at Inuvik. The slides also document various aspects of the survey work including clearing ground cover, drilling test holes and constructing roads. Additionally, the photographs depict various buildings being constructed at Inuvik and some close-ups of pile driving and the construction of the town's utilidor system. The slides are originals created by Curtis Merrill, with the exception of a few duplicate slides created by Roger Brown. These duplicate slides carry the notation "R.B.". The film reels and videocassette primarily feature Aklavik and the construction of the new settlement of Inuvik (initially known as East 3). One reel is believed to be from Merrill's 1949 film of an expedition to Foxe Basin. There is also footage of the South Slave Region, Great Slave Lake, and Nahanni Butte. The 13 pieces of film contain outtakes from the Aklavik/Inuvik footage.

This fonds consists of a typescript diary of Richard Bonnycastle's 1968 journey by plane from Fort Garry (Manitoba) through Alberta and down the Mackenzie River and back to Fort Garry. The narrative includes references to the trips he made while he was district manager for the Hudson's Bay Company. Places he visited on his journey included Fort Smith, Yellowknife, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik.

This fonds consists of 184 black and white photographs and 11 diaries dated between 1953 to 1975. The images depict a variety of locations that Knox traveled to while working as a trapper and when working as a Game Warden in Fort Smith. Images include Inuit and Inuvialuit from Bathurst Inlet and Devon Island, a trip to the Thelon Game Sanctuary, hunting, fishing and trapping activities, travel by dogsled and canoe, views of wildlife, camps, Hudson's Bay Company Posts and the communities of Baker Lake, Rocher River, Fort Providence and Hay River. The diaries' entries note weather conditions, Knox's day-to-day activities and wildlife he observed while working in Fort Smith as a Game Warden.

This fonds consists of 197 photographs of Dene, Inuit, and members of the clergy in group portraits, hunting with decoys, dogs hauling lumber and the Catholic Church mission boat Immaculata. Locations include: Arctic Red River, Slave River rapids, Bloody Falls, Aklavik, Fort Smith, Coppermine River, Fort Resolution, Herschel Island and St. Albert (Alberta).

This fonds consists of a copy of a typed version of the diary of Otto Lahser. The diary describes the journey taken in 1898 and 1899 down the Athabasca and Slave Rivers to Great Slave Lake and then down the Mackenzie River to the Peel River aboard the boat "Enterprise." The diary includes details on weather, people they encountered and their attempts to locate gold.

This fonds consists of approximately 1.6 meters of textual material from the Department of Public Works and Highways. The material from the Directorate Division includes files and records related to Commissioner's tours during the 1970s, departmental reorganization, departmental goals and objectives, capital assistance, lease and contracting policies, decentralization and privatization efforts and affirmative action policies. There are also reports from the regions and communities on Public Works projects, transfer of resposnibilities from Ottawa, transfer of responsibilites to hamlets, energy conservation projects, material related to the maintenance of public buildings such as schools, Dene and Metis land claim information, the Business Incentive Policy (BIP), the Capital Site Planning Committee, Senior Management Committee Minutes, Project Management seminars and material from conferences that took place across the Northwest Territories. The remaining material, generated by the Project Management Division, is dated between 1977-1986. Included in this material are correspondence, drawings, and specifications relating to the construction of the Northwest Territories Pavilion that was part of Expo '86.

This fonds contains photographs taken between 1973 -1975 during three distinct northern expeditions. Photographs taken from the first expedition, which took place in May 1973, documnent transport vehicles used by the team, sites and captured phenomenon related to Sherstone's glaciology work, and the townships of Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, and Inuvik. Photographs of the second expedition, taking place from May -June 1974, capture transport vehicles and other equipment used by Sherstone's team, notable homes and buildings in Yellowknife, Fort Good Hope, Fort Wrigley, Norman Wells, Tuktoyuktuk, Resolute Bay and Frobisher Bay [Iqaluit], and Sherstone's research sites and camp facilities during this expedition. Photographs of the third expedition occuring in May 1975 mainly feature aircrafts and landing sites, and natural phenomena viewed by Sherstone during this trip through Tuktoyuktuk and Norman Wells.

This fonds consists of 76 b&w print photographs taken by Frank Thomas Carter; five of the photos are hand coloured. The photos document Carter’s voyage to Norman Wells up the Mackenzie as well as the early stages of construction of the oil storage tanks at the Canol Project in Norman Wells during 1942-1943. The photos are numbered on the back in the order in which they appeared on album pages by the donor, Donald A. Davidson, Carter’s stepson. Overall themes include the Mackenzie River, construction, boats, camp life and the Canol project.

This fonds consists of 2.4 cm of textual records (one bound volume and one folder), two reels of 16 mm movie film (a large reel of 1000 ft and a small reel of 400 ft) and 317 photographs and negatives (198 of the Western Arctic and 119 of the Eastern Arctic). Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Inspector Cyril N.K. “Nordie” Kirk used the bound volume to record events during his time aboard the Hudson Bay Company supply ship the RMS "Nascopie” during its Eastern Arctic tour, summaries of RCMP inspections in New Brunswick, and activities during the holiday season between 1944 and 1945. He wrote and received the correspondence between 1945 and 1946 while living in Aklavik as RCMP Officer in Charge (OC). The letters detail daily life in Aklavik for his southern correspondents. CNK Kirk shot the film between July of 1947 and July of 1948. The large reel contains both black and white and colour footage of Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers, buildings, patrol boats, airplanes and travel by dog team as well as footage of Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk and Herschel Island. The small reel of film contains all colour footage of RCMP patrols by aircraft to Fort Norman (Tulita), Norman Wells, Camp Canol, as well as shots of Aklavik, including the All Saints Anglican Mission church, hospital and school, Aklavik residents cutting and hauling ice. In addition, there is footage of Leona E. Kirk, wife of Nordie Kirk, Henry Larsen, skipper of the St. Roch, Mike Zubko, Bruno Wiedeman, Charlie Smith, George Roberts, Knut Lang, Dave Sharon Jones, Jim Edwards (Jim Sittichinli), Caroline Moses, Jimmie Jones, Walter Jameson, Phoebe Poole, Louis Cardinal, and several RCMP officers such as Walter Evan Bayne, D.J. (Tiny) Martin, Arthur E. McKinnon, Alfred Kendi, David A. Coleman, Alexander Scotty Stewart. Included in the 317 black and white photographs, which includes 32 negatives, are 198 images depicting life in the Western Arctic from the perspective of RCMP OC Kirk, who was posted to Aklavik from 1945-1948. The images include the communities of Aklavik, Fort Good Hope, Fort Smith, Fort McPherson, Herschel Island, Tuktoyaktuk, Fort Norman (Tulita) and Reindeer Station, as well as aerial views of the Richardson Mountains and images of the Firth River. There are also images of RCMP patrols, the "Distributor", aircraft, RCMP buildings and the Kirk family. The remaining photographs depict Royal Canadian Mounted Police patrols of the Eastern Arctic aboard the RMS "Nascopie" in 1943 and 1944 and include images of Arctic Bay, Cape Smith, Chesterfield Inlet, Fort Ross, Churchill (Manitoba), Lake Harbour (Kimmirut), Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, Southampton, Wolstenholme and images of the "Nascopie".

This accession consists of the original and one copy of the 1906 Commanding Officer's Declaration.

Records include a print of the Snare River Power Project, completed in 1948, and four copy negatives from the "Gow Report", a report prepared in 1921 by D.B. Gow of the Dominion Water Power Branch, Dept. of the Interior. The report, which has been lost, was about a gauging station at Fort Fitzgerald (Alta.). Images are of Fitzgerald (Alta.) and Fort Smith waterfronts as well as of a portage between the two points.

The prints feature river transportation, the Canol Project, Norman Wells, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, Fort Providence, and Aklavik. They are believed to have been taken by George Zuckerman to illustrate the book "The Great Mackenzie".

The accession consists of a commemorative album titled "The Edmonton Bush Pilots: Northwest Territories Centennial Flight, August, 1970" compiled on behalf of the City of Edmonton for the NWT Centennial. It is a tribute to the importance of aviation in the histories of both Edmonton and the Northwest Territories. The album contains: a list of bush pilots; a chronology of events from 1904-1970, relating to the Edmonton Industrial Airport (Blatchford Field) and the associated pilots; brief profiles of selected bush pilots; and 23 black and white copy photographs of aviation, dated primarily in the 1920s and 1930s.

Records include photographs taken at Labine Point, Great Bear Lake. The images depict Philip St. Louis, an aerial view of Labine Point, and a Canadian Airways plane refuelling. One photo may have originally belonged to F. M. Boland.

Records include photographs relating to the Arctic Red River ferry MV McQuesten dating from the early summer of 1974. The second photograph features Captain Nash, who had brought the ferry down river from Hay River that season, cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

The photographs consist of assorted images around the Tuktoyaktuk area, including images of the DEW Line site there, notably Bar 3 and Bar D; three photographs of dogsled teams at Atkinson Point; the Hudson’s Bay Company building at Tuktoyaktuk; two pictures of the boat “Margaret” with Mike Shopik and a partially-identified man called Larry; a photograph of the Raddi family (David, Lucy, Sarah, Bonny, Alan, and Danny); a colour negative of a boy with a dog; a colour negative of two men posing on the ice; a photograph of a man on the ice holding a fishing net; and the cover of a Christmas greeting card that shows a group of children and the words Krismame Kruviasugitse (likely ”Merry Christmas”) in what is likely Inuvialuktun.

This accession consists of two pamphlets produced by the Mackenzie River Transport Company in 1938. The first is a Schedule of Sailings for the 1938 season, and the second is an advertisement entitled "To the Arctic: A Summer Trip Through Canada's Northwestern Waterways in Thirty-Five Days".
