Charlie's photo description ( condensed): When Indians (Dene) and trappers came to Fort Simpson in
summer they camped in their tents. People from down the Mackenzie congregated in the
downriver section of town, while those from upriver congregated on The Flats at the upper end
of the island. They did not like to camp together. Those on The Flats tended to be HBC people
while those down here usually traded at Northern Traders or the independents such as Bud Alley.
Here they are in front of Bud Alley's store and Ginger (Isisdore) Villeneuve's house. Somebody
(a white person) didn't like them in this location and wanted them out of here which generated
some local argument. As Charlie says, "I see no harm in them living there and they're only there
maybe a week, two weeks or a month and they're gone. So what?"

WDA's Comments, 2014 Feb 06: Charlie idealized his early days in Fort Simpson as a time of
harmony between everyone, Dene, Melis and whites alike, yet here he notes that people from
upriver and downriver did not wish to camp with each other (see interview for details of divides
among town residents and their origins).
