Little Doctor gap in Nahanni Range from pond N of Gus' place

Charlie's photo description: On the back of the photo it says, "1933 1st of July", That was up
in the field behind the Hudson's Bay. That's where the Hudson Bay used to grow the barley for
the Indian [Dene] soup. That was all ploughed up. One side ploughed with a lot of potatoes grown in it.
As long as Gifford was there I couldn't get in on it.
That was the first of July celebrations. It was kind of a community affair. Everybody got around
with the radio station and the police and ... Everybody was there. Most of the town should be in
these pictures. This one to the left, the guy that's walking off there, I think is Andrews. The
Indians [Dene] called him Dry Meat. He was a Dane. He'd come down the Liard. He never stayed at
Simpson. The guy with the white shirt and in the braces, that's Helge Carlson. He was a trapper.
I'm not so sure who them two guys are there at the post. Little Red Wolstenholme and George
Wilson are together (on right).George is the little old guy looking down at the ground with a cap
on.

Milt Campbell's Audio Caption for photo: 23. Number twenty-three is somewhat similar to twenty-two but no caption on the back except it's Harry, Bill and Gus. Now this big tent was used by Bill and Gus just for sleeping purposes. There's the cache in between and very little on it. Very little on it. This smaller tent was a junky tent where Harry and I stayed and we did the cooking in that tent.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Sep 11: The tent on the left that Milt and Harry stayed in might have been junky but the comment sounds uncharitable given that the pair took a free ride in the RCAF planes in the summer of 1934 with almost no gear or food. Bill Clark and Gus Kraus put them up in their only available tent. Bill and Gus also seem to have shared their food although Milt and Harry did their share of hunting and camp chores. With food running out in late summer or early fall, Milt and Harry were elected to go out via raft and fly back in with a large food supply. The first raft they built failed in the first rapids but they ran into Faille and he built them a properly constructed raft with which they got out. They flew back with Wop May in winter with more food and more gear but insufficient to see them through the winter so Gus and Milt were soon back hunting almost continuously to keep them all in food. Despite Milt's and Harry's imposition the four seem to have got along quite well.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Oct. 12: Just who this is and where the photo was taken is unknown, however, given that the photo has come from Lodema and Arthur George it may have been taken at Fort Nelson. Certainly the river is about the right size.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: The bulkhead appears completed but the flow of water indicates that the special concrete, which could harden underwater, has not been poured yet. Once it was poured the flow was stopped except for a few small dribbles.

WDA's Comments, 2014 Mar. 10: To me the person on the bottom of the saw is too old to be Edwin. Even in 1949 Edwin would be 20 and the bottom person looks a lot older than that.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Oct. 11: Bill Cormack came into the north ca. 1934. Bill visited the Georges in Fort Nelson in the 1940s and they were selling photos of the general area from their store. Bill asked Lodema if she would put together an album of photos for him and she did (see Cormack interview). This is one of those photos.

This photo is labelled as "a particularly heavy and early October snowfall." In her interview Lodema describes how a forest fire was threatening their place when she was alone and had no way of escaping. During the night, she heard a strange sound and awoke to discover it was raining. This photo was taken 24-30 hours later. What a relief! The snow kept coming that winter and it was incredibly deep, making major difficulties for animals and trappers alike. Lodema describes wolves starving to death. See her interview.

Charlie's photo description: Sack race. That's the first of July too. They are all most little kids ..
And George McPherson right in the middle of the picture. The rest I can't really make out for
sure who they are. It shows that we did some things them days that was civilized.

WDA's Comments, 2013 Jul 10: The completed flume carrying Bennett Creek over and beyond the pothole. The bulkhead, of vertical (right) and horizontal (left) tongue and groove Douglas Fir boards that were flown in just for this purpose was the last thing to be finished and it diverted Bennett Creek into the flume. The work tent was just beyond the bottom of the flume.
