This fonds consists of 118 black and white copy negatives. The images include locations such as Aklavik, Baker Lake, Bathurst Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet, Coppermine, Shingle Point (Yukon), and Herschel Island (Yukon). Images feature Inuit, buildings (including igloos), boats and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) personnel.

This fonds consists of 152 photographs documenting Alma Guest's travels to and within the Northwest Territories. The images feature the construction, launch and voyages of the S.S. "Distributor," the fur trade, scenes and communities along the Slave and Mackenzie rivers and the Inuit, Gwich'in, Dogrib and Metis people. Communities depicted in the photographs include Fort Providence, Fort Smith, Fort Norman and Fort Resolution.

This fonds consists of prints and negatives, including cellulose nitrate and one glass negative, formerly owned by Archibald Lang Fleming, as well as a program for the opening of the All Saints' Hospital in Aklavik in 1937, attended by Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir (John Buchan). The photographs include the communities of: Aklavik, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay, Cape Dorset, Chesterfield Inlet, Clyde River, Coppermine, Eskimo Point, Lake Harbour, Pangnirtung, and Pond Inlet, among others. Images feature the portraits and daily activities of Inuit and Dene and Anglican churches and missions.

Many of the photographs are postcards mounted on scrapbook pages. The photographs were taken in the 1920s and depict Fort Simpson, New Chicago, riverboats, Arctic Red River, the ramparts and Fort Norman as well as other scenes from around Great Slave Lake and along the Mackenzie River as far north as Aklavik.

The report, titled "Reconnaissance of Yellowknife River and Adjacent Lakes, Great Slave Lake, N.W.T., July 1 - Sept. 7, 1928", carries the name Henry L. Smyth, Jnr. on the cover. The map is of "Yellowknife River and adjacent lakes from Yellowknife Village north to the third portage," is also dated July 1-September 7, 1928, and was drawn by Mr. Smyth. Scale 1" to 4,000 feet. The present day site of Detah is indicated on the map as being Yellowknife Village. Mineral deposits in the area have been annotated onto the map.

This fonds consists of one folder of text and approximately 865 photographs taken during the time Bart Hawkins spent in the north at various Royal Canadian Mounted Police stations, including Fort Simpson, Yellowknife, Port Radium, and Fort Liard. Included among the images are views of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) duties, some recreational activities of the RCMP and views of the scenery in the regions where Bart Hawkins was stationed. Many of the images show RCMP personnel and facilities. Also included are images of treaty payment days and Port Radium mine. The textual material consists of two pamphlets from the city of Yellowknife.

The videocassette consists of "The City of Yellowknife", part of the series "Sketches of Our Town." The video, hosted and narrated by Harvey Kirck, was filmed in the fall of 1991. It depicts Yellowknife past and present, and includes archival material, and interviews with residents Michael Borden, Dave Lovell, Barb Cameron, Walt Humphries and pilot Jim McAvoy.

The textual records consists of one letter describing the audiocassette. Most of the photographs date from between 1963 and 1978, although there is one from 1932 and several from 1993. The photographs document the Reverend Ben S. Hall's life in Hay River from 1963-1970, as well as a 1978 Boy Scouting trip to Coppermine and Pine Point. They also depict images of public events, Katlodeeche First Nation Reserve, aircraft, clergy, and Yellowknife. The audio cassette narrates the series of colour slides of the Boy Scout trip to Coppermine and Pine Point.

This fonds consists of 0.6 cm of textual records, ca. 13,000 photographs (col. slides, col. negatives, and b&w negatives), and 31 reels of 16 mm film.

The textual records comprise two newsletters produced by Bern Will Brown and a series of letters written by Capt. C.T. Pederson. The newsletters give a brief overview of life in the community of Colville Lake during 1991 and 1992, including items of interest relating to various members of the community. The Pedersen correspondence is autobiographical, including reminiscences of C.T. Pederson of some of his activities in the north; the majority are addressed to Father Brown of Our Lady of the Snows Mission in Colville Lake, but one letter is addressed to Commander Ransom.

The photographs include images of a wide variety of subjects, particularly activities of the Catholic Church and traditional activities of the Dene, Inuvialuit and Inuit, including hunting, trapping and transportation. There are photos of many locations throughout the NWT as well as some locations in Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

The films and videocassettes include footage of dog teams, life at Colville Lake, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Aklavik, Husky Lakes, Whitefish Station, Tulita (Fort Norman), Nahanni Butte, Fort Simpson, Bern Will Brown, various Catholic priests and bishops, fishing, children at play, aircraft, construction of the mission, reindeer, whaling, trapping, hunting, church services, many local families including: Kochon, Codzi, Masuzumi, Cotchilly, Oudzi and political visitors such as Governors-General.

The photographs were originally housed in an album. Most of the prints have no accompanying information such as dates or identifications. The album contains images of mines and mining camps, fishing, hunting, fur trading, dog sledding, the Largent family and the city of Yellowknife. Most of the photographs were likely taken in the 1940's.

The cover page of the album reads: "This album was put together by Bill Largent. Bill spent from 1920 to 1951 in the Yellowknife and Hay River area. His parents were fur traders or supplied trading posts in these areas. Bill passed away in Nanaimo in 1981, July 25th."

This fonds consists of records created and held by Bishop Arthur Henry Sovereign during his appointments as Bishop of the Yukon from 1931-1932 and Bishop of Athabasca from 1932-1950. The records broadly document Bishop Sovereign's time in the north, his travels to different communities, and the development of cities and towns that he served.

The fond was put together into series by the archivist based on location: Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, and other (Misc).

The images depict daily life, mine employees, the camp and mining operations at Port Radium. In addition, there are several images of Northern Transportation Company Limited tugboats, barges and paddle steamers, as well as locations such as Hay River, Norman Wells and Inuvik.

This fonds consists of 754 photographs, 95 postcards, 23 audio reels and 2 audio cassettes, 29 maps and 8.2 meters of textual records created and accumulated by Robert "Bobby" Porritt from the 1920s until his death in 1984. The records include correspondence, Porritt's notes, accounting records, banking records, other business records, records pertaining to the Northwest Territories Legislative Council (consisting primarily of copies), memorabilia, Jock McMeekan's records, a few annual reports and newsletters, some posters and ephemera, newspaper clippings, maps and plans, sound recordings, and photographs. In particular, the records document Porritt's occupational and political activities, his personal interests and his relationships with many friends and family members.

The correspondence, in particular is an excellent record of the economic, social and political aspects of life in Hay River from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Porritt appears to have maintained intense personal contacts with the majority of the people in the Hay River area, including considerable correspondence with aboriginal hunters and trappers, who had become friends of Porritt. Also well documented is the Fort Resolution community in the 1930s, through correspondence and business records of the Fort Resolution Lumber Company. Since Porritt was Member of the Legislative Council for Mackenzie South, the records include correspondence with various other members of Council (e.g. Commissioner Ben G. Sivertz and John Goodall) and members of parliament. These letters contain discussion about political and bureaucratic issues facing Council before the move of the territorial government to Yellowknife in 1967. Unusually active in local organizations, Porritt's papers contain correspondence on behalf of these organizations. His interest in all aspects of his community, the north, and the world in general, are revealed in the magazines, ephemera, posters and other types of items he collected. The photographs taken and collected by Porritt cover a wide variety of subjects and dates. Photographs of family members, friends, business colleagues, communities and special interests such as aircraft and marine transportation are predominating.

In 1986, the NWT Archives received some 70 linear meters of records of Bobby Porritt, which included newspapers and government publications. Although the records had survived a flood and subsequent repacking, virtually no original order was discernible. Arrangement of series is by type of record, with the correspondence arranged in somewhat more detail than most other series. The photographs were sorted according to several subject categories.

Records include images of Yellowknife, Pine Point, Con Mine, prospectors, tractor trains, and barges.

Records include photographs of Yellowknife. Included are shots of the Wildcat Café, Canadian Pacific Airlines terminal building, and Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines Ltd.

Records include photographs of the community of Tungsten. Most of the images depict the Cantung mining and milling operations; there are also images of the townsite.

The photographer of these images is unknown. They were produced by Bush Edit House and may have been taken by the firm's owner, Burt Bush, who was a film producer in North Vancouver and was often contracted by resource companies for their corporate presentations.

Records include images of various settlements across the NWT. The photographs, primarily aerial photographs, appear to have been collected by the Dept. of Energy, Mines and Resources from a number of sources. The majority of the images are of Yellowknife, but the collection also includes images depicting Fort Rae (Behchoko), Tukotyaktuk, Aklavik, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Rocher River, and Shingle Point, Yukon.

This accession consists of two file folders labelled Aklavik and Port Radium and site plans for Aklavik and Yellowknife. Inside the folders are charts illustrating daylight/twilight/darkness distribution at 66 degrees and 68 degrees North and two internal memorandums about Aklavik and Port Radium written by Margaret R. Montgomery for the Northern Operational Research Section, Department of National Defence. Also in the folders are three maps (0001) Hydrographic chart of Great Bear Lake, (0002) site plan of Port Radium, and (0003) Road & Rail Routes in the Northwest.

This fonds consists of approximately 51 meters of textual records, approximately 116 photographs, and 31 maps created and accumulated by the Northern Administration Branch and its various predecessors, from 1920 to 1978. The material was generated by the Federal government's activities in administering the Northwest Territories. Most of the records (over 34 m of textual records) are composed of files transferred from Ottawa to Yellowknife beginning in 1967, and include administrative and operational files. The majority of these files date between 1949 and 1967 and incorporate: correspondence, reports, vital statistic information, financial data, minutes, and a wide variety of reference material kept by the department. The files were classified via a numerical block system. The block system consisted of primary, secondary and tertiary levels such that a composite file number (for example 311-105-93) would represent a progression from general subject matter to a specific subject and/or location. The following primary blocks arrange the files:

100 - Administration;
200 - Economic and Industrial Development;
300 - Engineering Projects;
400 - Forests and Game;
500 - Public Service;
600 - Education;
1000 - General files on settlements, associations, companies, provinces, foreign countries, Inuit affairs, and resources;
20 - Individual case files;
3 - Personnel and organizational files.

None of the 700, 800 or 900 block files were forwarded to the NWT Archives. Moreover, at the time of transfer from Ottawa, it appears that other records from the file blocks brought to Yellowknife were culled in Ottawa. In addition, not all government functions were transferred in 1967, and some files contain records generated after 1967 from the continued administration of a function either by the federal government or from the use of the files by the new Territorial Government. A small number of photographs were located in the files during processing, however, these images have been left in their original files.

Additional accruals to this fonds make up another 10 meters of textual records and include the Northern Administration Branch records from the Fort Churchill district office dating from 1960 to 1970, and Western Arctic education records from 1964 to 1969. Another accrual of 7 meters of textual records documents the administration of trapping and hunting in the Northwest Territories, including correspondence, Superintendent of Game daily journals, game officer daily diaries and monthly reports, meeting minutes and materials, wildlife publications and reports, procedures, registered trapping area files, licence applications and licences, hunting and trapping returns, and fur export tax returns.

Other records of this fonds consist of: four ledgers kept between 1920 and 1967 documenting fur trapping and fur trading activities, four ledgers documenting fur and game take and value on registered trap lines, various licensing, and scientific research work; budget papers including estimates, expenditure statements and capital substantiation reports for 1966 to 1969; 2 supplementary readers, "Nuna" and "The Story of Papik an Eskimo Boy" compiled by the Curriculum Section of the Education Division from the journals of young Inuit children; and a 1954 report produced by C.C. Johnson, a Resident Engineer from Fort Smith. This report, entitled "Preliminary Report, Mackenzie Highway - Mills Lake Road" includes 31 corner mounted photographic prints and 16 black and white negatives. The report discusses plans to build a road to Mills Landing. In addition, there are copies of the Eskimo Bulletin dated from 1953-1959. The Eskimo Bulletin was produced by the Northern Administration and Land Branch in order to teach Inuit the English language.

Records include images of Yellowknife and Dettah: a view of 50th Street and the Royal Canadian Legion Building (:0001); a trailer camp in Yellowknife (:0002); a view of Willow Flats (:0003); the docks at old town (:0004); and views of Detah in winter (:0005 and :0006). The photographs appear to have been part of the Canadian Government Travel Bureau's collection.

This fonds consists of approximately 3 cm of textual material and 10 black and white photographs. The textual material consists of a copy of a journal kept by Carleton Appleby during the summer of 1946, during a trip on the Athabasca and Slave Rivers aboard the boat 'Beaver Lake.' He also visited Yellowknife, Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Rae during his journey. The 10 photographs were probably taken that same summer and depict the communities of Fort Rae and Yellowknife, as well as individuals he met in Yellowknife and aboard the riverboat 'Dease Lake.'

This fonds consists of 171 copy negatives of prints that were contained in photo albums. The images include: views of the Fort Providence mission buildings; class photographs; portraits of Oblate missionaries and Grey Nuns; general views of Fort Providence; and construction activities. The images were copied and the original albums were returned to the Grey Nuns.

This fonds consists of 36 cm of textual material and 124 colour slides. The textual material is made up of 12 volumes of Harrman's journals dated August 6, 1959 to November 11, 1967, a manuscript of an unpublished story entitled "Lucy Beavertail," numerous short stories, sketchbooks, cards and personal records, including accounts. The 124 colour slides feature Rae and the paintings of Charles Harrman.
