This accession consists of a document related to an educational program on government and elections. The document, entitled "Position of the Legislative Assembly on Constitutional Development in the Northwest Territories" contains twelve lessons explaining the processes of government and the procedure of elections. It was designed to be used as part of a larger program by community educators on "Government and Elections" prior to the 1975 Territorial election.

This accession consists of an annotated copy of the "Summary of Report of the Advisory Commission on the Development of Government in the Northwest Territories" (Carrothers Commission 1966) and a complete sequence of Tuesday Letters (8 Dec. 1964 to 16 Jan. 1967), which were informal newsletters from Mr. Sivertz to the members of the NWT Council.

The video, which first aired nationally in early-2004, was produced by Force Four Entertainment of Vancouver, British Columbia for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation series 'Life and Times'. It describes Nellie Cournoyea's rise to prominence despite difficult times, including her experiences in radio broadcasting, business, and politics, first in the Mackenzie Delta Region and later as a member of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly. She was the first woman to hold the position of Government Leader of the Northwest Territories.

This fonds consists of 754 photographs, 95 postcards, 23 audio reels and 2 audio cassettes, 29 maps and 8.2 meters of textual records created and accumulated by Robert "Bobby" Porritt from the 1920s until his death in 1984. The records include correspondence, Porritt's notes, accounting records, banking records, other business records, records pertaining to the Northwest Territories Legislative Council (consisting primarily of copies), memorabilia, Jock McMeekan's records, a few annual reports and newsletters, some posters and ephemera, newspaper clippings, maps and plans, sound recordings, and photographs. In particular, the records document Porritt's occupational and political activities, his personal interests and his relationships with many friends and family members.

The correspondence, in particular is an excellent record of the economic, social and political aspects of life in Hay River from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Porritt appears to have maintained intense personal contacts with the majority of the people in the Hay River area, including considerable correspondence with aboriginal hunters and trappers, who had become friends of Porritt. Also well documented is the Fort Resolution community in the 1930s, through correspondence and business records of the Fort Resolution Lumber Company. Since Porritt was Member of the Legislative Council for Mackenzie South, the records include correspondence with various other members of Council (e.g. Commissioner Ben G. Sivertz and John Goodall) and members of parliament. These letters contain discussion about political and bureaucratic issues facing Council before the move of the territorial government to Yellowknife in 1967. Unusually active in local organizations, Porritt's papers contain correspondence on behalf of these organizations. His interest in all aspects of his community, the north, and the world in general, are revealed in the magazines, ephemera, posters and other types of items he collected. The photographs taken and collected by Porritt cover a wide variety of subjects and dates. Photographs of family members, friends, business colleagues, communities and special interests such as aircraft and marine transportation are predominating.

In 1986, the NWT Archives received some 70 linear meters of records of Bobby Porritt, which included newspapers and government publications. Although the records had survived a flood and subsequent repacking, virtually no original order was discernible. Arrangement of series is by type of record, with the correspondence arranged in somewhat more detail than most other series. The photographs were sorted according to several subject categories.

The sound recordings include (:0001) C. M. "Bud" Drury (Office of the Special Representative for Constitutional Development in the Northwest Territories) press conference, 19 Dec. 1977, Cairns was the reporter, and (:0002) an election campaign interview Cairns conducted with George Erasmus on 5 May 1979. The textual records consist of two items from the records of the Yellowknife Daycare Association.

This accession consists of 25 maps which indicate the electoral boundaries of the NWT as asssented to on October 27, 1978. All 22 electoral regions are represented, and in addition, there is one large map of the NWT which shows each of the 22 districts.

This fonds consists of 10 cm of textual records and 17 maps, which illustrate the electoral boundaries within the Northwest Territories between 1962 and 1963. The records relate to 18 June 1962 election for the Electoral District of the Mackenzie River and 8 April 1963 election for the Electoral District of the Northwest Territories. The textual records consist of working documents and copies of official documents that L.F.G. "Bob" Borden had to compile for the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer after the elections were held. The records document the difficulties encountered in organizing these elections and in attempting to distribute electoral boxes to all potential polling stations within the Northwest Territories. The records have been divided into two series; the first series is of textual materials and the second is cartographic.

This accession consists of one photograph of Hugh St. Quenton Cayley (Saskatchewan Archives number R-A6914). The image was copied from a composite photograph of the members of the 2nd Legislative Assembly for the Northwest Territories, 1891 (Saskatchewan Archives number R-B1490).

This fonds consists of 1.5 meters of textual records from David Searle's career as a member of the Territorial Council and as Speaker for the Legislative Assembly. The varied subject matter, from education to labour relations to land claims, is indicative of the numerous issues of concern for the Government of the Northwest Territories. The files have been kept in their original arrangement, however a few of the larger files have been divided into two files for conservation purposes and ease of handling.

Records include J.I. Glick's personal correspondence, political correspondence and ephemera, and passports. Also included are recordings of radio programs on topics of interest to Glick, namely Northern issues and the Progressive Conservative party.

This fonds consists of 3 m of textual material created by John H. Parker throughout his career spent in the Northwest Territories. Included are records related to the transfer of responsibilities from the federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs to the then fledgling Government of the Northwest Territories. There are also files on a variety of political subjects including constitutional development, devolution of responsibility from the Commissioner's Office to the elected Executive Council, and land claims and the division of the Northwest Territories. John Parker was also involved in many groups and associations. Records of the Legislative Assembly Building Society, the Science Institute of the Northwest Territories, the Fox Moth Society, and St. John Ambulance are found here.

This fonds contains textual records dating from 1930-1971, and is predominantly comprised of correspondance exchanged during John Goodall's tenure as an elected member of the Council of the Northwest Territories from 1954-1967. Along with professional and personal correspondance, this fonds contains a series of handwritten notes detailing Goodall's presentations during council, motions and sessional papers annotated by Goodall, numerous additions of the Fort Simpson Sacred Heart Mission newspaper (Catholic Voice), and memoribilia.

This accession consists of one report entitled "Northerners of Renown". This report contains short biographical notes on Peter Baker, Archie McMullen, John H. Parker, Oliver Lawson Stanton, R. J. "Jack" Stevens, W. Leigh Brintnell, A. J. "Bert" Boxer, Gordon Ingraham, Henry Busse, George Pinsky, Arthur Umbach, Ernest Boffa, Norman W. Byrne, J. H. Sissons, J. Murray "Jock" McMeekan, and G. Gordon Latham.

Records include a Native Press calendar from 1979, a Native Communications Society calendar from 1980, a Northern Games brochure from 1974, 3 political brochures for Claire M. Barnabe from 1979, a NWT Travelog from 1966 and a 1975 programme for "Handel's Messiah."

Records include Debates, Bills, Sessional Papers, Appropriations, Supplementary Appropriations, Recommendations to Council, Information Items, Monthly Letters, Tabled Documents, Motions, Questions and Returns (Oral and Written) and a selection of Commissioner's Opening Addresses. They were produced by the 1st through the 67th sessions (1st to 8th Councils) of the Council of the Northwest Territories, the predecessor to the Legislative Assembly.

Records consist of biographical information, signed Oaths of Office and Oaths of Allegiance and correspondence between members and the Office of the Clerk for the 8th Council of the Northwest Territories (8th Assembly).

The record is that of a proclaimation signed by Robert Welch, Provincial Secretary and Minister of Citizenship of Ontario, on behalf of Premier John Robarts to mark the NWT Centennial.

Included are Ministerial and Deputy Minister chronos, as well as briefing material.

The collection is comprised of photographs that were deleted from the files in 1992. Themes include: the Legislative Assembly, Members of the Legislative Assembly and the Executive; as well as involvement of the Government of the Northwest Territories in housing, education and training, arts and crafts, tourism, transportation and industry. Also included are images documenting Indigenous land use, community activities, facilities, special events and people. Tessa Macintosh, the photographer for the Government of the NWT, took the majority of the photographs.

The recordings contain three programs including "MLA", (item :0001), which examines people's expectations and attitudes toward government, and explains the election process as well as the workings of the Legislative Assembly; "Home Maintenance--N.W.T.H.C.", (item :0002), and "Home Maintenance--C.M.H.C.", (item :0002), uses interviews to provide information on GNWT and federal government home repair programs.
