This fonds consists of 118 black and white copy negatives. The images include locations such as Aklavik, Baker Lake, Bathurst Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet, Coppermine, Shingle Point (Yukon), and Herschel Island (Yukon). Images feature Inuit, buildings (including igloos), boats and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) personnel.

This fonds consists of prints and negatives, including cellulose nitrate and one glass negative, formerly owned by Archibald Lang Fleming, as well as a program for the opening of the All Saints' Hospital in Aklavik in 1937, attended by Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir (John Buchan). The photographs include the communities of: Aklavik, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay, Cape Dorset, Chesterfield Inlet, Clyde River, Coppermine, Eskimo Point, Lake Harbour, Pangnirtung, and Pond Inlet, among others. Images feature the portraits and daily activities of Inuit and Dene and Anglican churches and missions.

The textual material comprises an incomplete copy of L.T. Burwash's report entitled, "The Eskimo, Their Country and Its Resources: Economic Survey of the East Coasts of Hudson Bay and James Bay from Richmond Gulf to Rupert House, Including the Belcher and Other Adjacent Islands," Ottawa, Dept. of the Interior, 1927. (Typewritten.) The report contains a diary of the trip taken by Burwash, descriptions of Inuit life, food supplies, clothing, health, the influence of trading posts, housing conditions, and mineral and animal resources in the region. Much of the report focuses on the Inuit in the regions around Little Whale River and the Belcher Islands. Included in this report were photographs of communities along the eastern coast of Hudson Bay and James Bay and eight maps. The mounting of the photographs in this report suggests that this copy was a draft produced before its final publication.

This accession consists of 2 supplementary readers entitled "Nuna" and "The Story of Papik an Eskimo Boy." These readers were compiled by the Curriculum Section of the Education Division from the journals of young Inuit children.

Records are comprised of Volume I, Numbers 1-5 and Number 7 of the Eskimo Bulletin. The Northern Administration and Lands Branch, Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources produced the Eskimo Bulletin in order to teach Inuit the English language. The bulletins, date from 1953-1958, and cover various topics such as production of handicrafts and instructions on maintaining engines, as well as provide Inuktitut words and syllabics and the corresponding English words for such topics as animals, tools and equipment, household items, clothing, modes of transportation, body parts, people and colours.

This fonds consists of 296 reel to reels (original masters) and 678 audio cassettes (original masters) copied to 661 sound CDs (RedBook Audio format - Archival Masters), which contain approximately 1013 oral history recordings and 1.2 meters of transcriptions from the Committee for Original People's Entitlement (COPE). The sound CDs constitute the archival masters. These recordings are in Inuvialuktun, Gwich'in and North Slavey and contain life stories of elders as well as traditional legends. Many of the recordings are part of CBC broadcast programming.

This fonds consists of 4 cm of textual material, 10 sound CDs, 8 DAT audio cassettes, 8 sound cassettes and 19 colour slides. The textual material is made up of transcripts of the interviews conducted by David Pelly for the Wager Bay Oral History Project, the final report for the Mount Pelly Territorial Park Oral History Project--Uvayok, and interviews from Sanikiluaq. The eight DAT audiocassettes contain copies of the sound cassette interviews with elders in Cambridge Bay that were undertaken for the Mount Pelly Territorial Park Project and ten compact discs contain interviews with elders in Sanikiluaq about the traditional knowledge of seals. Also included in this fonds are 19 colour slides of the people interviewed by David Pelly for the Wager Bay Oral History Project.

This fonds consists of two DAT audiocassettes (archival masters) and one audio reel (original master). The recordings are of the 2nd Annual Drum Dance Festival held at the Coppermine school on December 25-26, 1955. David S. Wilson recorded the festival and provided an introduction and periodic commentary on the recordings.

This accession consists of eight black and white prints that were taken either at, or in the vicinity of, Kittiyakyut (Kittigazuit) in the Mackenzie Delta. They appear to date from the mid 1940s to the late 1950s. Kittiyakyut was a traditional whaling camp for the Inuvialuit who occupy the Delta. The images depict scows, tugboats, stages used to dry whale meat, and some of the Inuvialuit who occupied the region. Locations include Whitefish Point (Nalruriam Nuvuaq), Whitefish Station (Nalruriak), and Kittigazuit (Kittiyakyut).

Ten of the photos appear in Schwarz's book "Elik: and other stories of the Mackenzie Eskimos" and are portraits of the storytellers. These include Archie (Headpoint) Erigaktuk, Kenneth Peeloolook, Sarah Raddi, Jessie Olorgrak, Susie Tiktalik, Felix Nuyaviak, William Firth, Elizabeth Blake, Alik Alubuk Stefansson, and Alex Kakianen. Other images are of Herbert Schwarz and the gravemarker for Constable R. O. H. Taylor of the "Lost Patrol."

The photographs were taken by Gladys Vear during her residency at Discovery Mine, Northwest Territories, between 1955-1968. Mrs. Vear was an active member of the Discovery Mines chapter of the Women's Institute, and she travelled to various arctic communities (Tuktoyaktuk and Coppermine) to speak with Aboriginal women and instruct them on electric sewing machines.

The majority of the images appear to have been taken by Roman Catholic Father Maurice Metayer and show Holman, the old settlement of Holman at King's Bay, and residents of Mashoagak.

Records include photographs of the Holman region copied from the original images. The images primarily document people in the community and show traditional activities, camps and domestic life. In addition, there are images of the Roman Catholic mission, boats such as the "Mary", and priests Father Tardy and Father Metayer.

This accession consists of one photograph (colour print) of Margaret Cockney at a drum dance in Tuktoyaktuk in the 1950s.

This accession consists of 7.5 cm of textual records comprised of academic publications authored by Miriam Leith, as well as a large number of draft and research notes produced by Ms. Leith in her research on northern food and nutrition as well as housing programs. Files also contain correspondence and reports concerning northing housing programs. Related to Ms. Leith's work with the Adult Housing Education Program. Also included in the collection are copies of diet information and recipes distributed to the local people. Some of these materials are written in syllabics.

This accession consists of several prints (plate illustrations) of explorers, colour illustration of "arctic fauna" (German titling), colour illustration of "Eskimoes of Hudson's Bay", letter from Sir Clement Markham (3 Feb. 1898) , copy of a "Notice to Mariners frequenting Davis Strait.

The images depict elders, members of the Tourism Committee, and government officials in Pangnirtung.

The images were taken at Fort McPherson, Fort Smith and Fort Franklin. Featured in the photographs are elders, traditional games and activities. They are not identified beyond geographic location. There are also images of the Perry Expedition and what appear to be Department of Interior - Yukon and Northwest Territories Branch photographs. In addition, there are images from throughout the arctic, with the majority appearing to be of the Keewatin Region.

The images document traditional food preparation techniques of the Inuvialuit, including the use of the drying rack at fish camps; Inuvialuit elders; as well as archaeological sites, such as burial sites, sod houses, and the corrals once used to herd reindeer. The images also document the archaeological excavation team and their own camps. Examples of scientific phenomena such as ice push and shoreline erosion are shown. In addition there are photographs of the DEW-Line, Tuktoyaktuk harbour, heritage sites, oil exploration and oil rigs at McKinley Bay, and artificial islands. Aerial photographs document wildlife, Mackenzie Delta communities, and geographic features such as pingoes. Caribou, swans, eider ducks, siksik (ground squirrel), the jellyfish of McKinley Bay and other wildlife are shown. Locations include Tuktoyaktuk, Reindeer Station, Anderson River, Whitefish Station, Stanton, Warren Point, Nicholson Point, Kittigazuit, Husky Lake, Wood Bay, and North Star Harbour. Specifically in Tuktoyaktuk, there are photographs of significant buildings used formerly or still being used. These include the Roman Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Mission Warehouse, 'Our Lady of Lourdes' (ship), the RCMP barracks, the Anglican Church, and the Hudson's Bay Company staff house.

The audio consists of interviews with elders from the Tuktoyaktuk region on various topics such as toponyms, hunting, and traditional life. The corresponding transcripts make up the 30 cm of textual records.

Video footage includes drum dancing, traditional food preperation and interviews with elders regarding tradtional place names.

Accession consists of an Analysis of the Dene Language Information Review, as well as Dene Traditional Life Series and Inuit Traditional Life Series.

The collection consists of sound recordings of interviews conducted by Marc Stevenson, transcripts of interviews, and copies of historic photographs depicting Inuit and the Baffin region collected from the Public Archives of Canada. The sound recordings include: an interview in August 1983 with Etoangat at Kekerten whaling station; interviews conducted by Marc Stevenson at Kekerten and Pangnirtung in August 1984; and one apparently unrelated recording of an interview with an Inuk elder. The transcripts appear to be copies of twelve interviews conducted by Jaypeetee Akpalialuk in March 1984. The people of these interviews include: Kunugsiq Nuvaqiq, Shaimaiyuk Simon, Annie Alivatuk, Koagak Akulukjuk, Towkie Maniapik, Malaiya Akulukjuk, Martha Kakee, Sowdloo Shukulak, Etoangat Aksayook, Katchoo Evik, Koodloo Pitsulak, and Nowyook Nickutimusie.

"Koukdjuak Crossing: Caribou Tagging on Baffin Island" was produced in 1984 and is 18 minutes long. It explains the caribou-tagging program, as it existed on Baffin Island up to that date. The film shows Paul Kraft and crew ear-tagging caribou on the Koukdjuak River, and then explains how this has contributed to knowledge of caribou movements on south Baffin. This film is available in English (:0001) and Inuktitut (:0002). "To Have Forever: Hunting the Bathurst Caribou Herd" was produced in 1986 and is 26 minutes long. This film shows the importance of the Bathurst herd to three different cultures: Inuit, Dene and non-natives. Hunters are shown in summer, fall and winter, and different meat handling techniques are compared and contrasted. This film is available in English (:0003) and Innuiaqtun (:0004). The Innuiaqtun version is available on VHS videocassette only.
